To wonder why we still use PayPal?

I hate PayPal.
Yet again, they are holding my money for no reason except from their ‘own internal security reviews’ . I’m forced to use PayPal because the platform I’m using insists on it. For YEARS I’ve had issue after issue with PayPal in various ways, through eBay, and other sites where there’s been no other option. Yet through my bank I have a million tools to send money safely globally, and at a far cheaper rate. Anyone else mad at PayPal? Angry

I’ve honestly never had a single problem with it, in more than a decade.

What reason do they give for repeatedly holding your money?

Sorry you are having difficulties. I've never had any but it's a pain in the arse if a mechanism that should be straightforward fights back.

I hate PayPal too. But because it makes it way too easy to buy stuff from my armchair Grin

Seriously though, they've been really great in all the years I've used them

That’s interesting . If you haven’t had an issue with it, do you use it as , for instance, an eBay seller rather than a buyer. Or similar?

Paypal offers refund protection, bank transfer doesn't.

I've never had an issue either, even when I used to sell stuff on ebay.

Use it all the time when buying online.

Wow I’m so surprised at all the PayPal love

Yes me. I have forgotten my password. Every time I request a new password they email me a link that asks me to login - with my original password - to set a new one.

I CAN'T do that because I have FORGOTTEN it.

Pointless waste of space.

(This is where some wise and clever MNer comes and tells me how it is done. Hopefully)

She probably has a lot of 'family and friends' sending payments that should actually be business transactions.

I've heard about this issue a LOT with freelance artists selling prints etc. Online. One art YouTuber I watch was in tears over it a few months ago. She had to spend all of her savings in order to fulfil orders because PayPal wouldn't release the money she had been paid for said orders, and she didn't want the customers to suffer or cancel their orders because of it. In that video she also talks about which company she will be using instead, so perhaps that might help you too. Here's a link to that video:

Never had an issue. You must be doing something dodgy by their standards. Do you buy and sell abroad? Take payments for business as "friends and family"?

@ alterego2 i appreciate the solidarity and hope your issue is resolved soon!

I had money taken out of my account fraudulently by PayPal. They paid it back quickly. But then charged me a fee. Not happy.

Never once had a problem either.

I generally buy through it and it’s my preferred way to pay for things now on most websites. I’ve also received money on it from Facebook selling for instance and the very odd eBay sale.

But you don't, that's what you get with paypal. There is no similar protection with any bank transfer mechanism other than credit cards, but of course individuals can't take credit cards.

Thank you @SuckingDownDarjeeling yes, I’m in a similar field. I’ll have a watch. It’s so frustrating.
Yes I send and receive money globally.

Just to reiterate to anybody else wondering, it's not because the activity is actually dodgy. When you listen to the stories of people who have had these issues it's actually quite appalling that PayPal are allowed to get away with things like this. People who sell the odd bits here and there on eBay aren't likely to ever experience these problems. But some people actually lose all of the money they've been paid, they never get it back. It's terrible and since learning about this I've decided I will never use PayPal for business purposes.

Mainly as a buyer, though sometimes as a seller or to receive money.

No problems at all. (Though clearly I’ve jinxed myself now and will have unleashed all sorts of PayPal hell Grin)

I prefer it to other means. Got scammed on depop recently and after they investigated it they refunded me as I'd used it to pay.
I think it gives more protection than just through the bank.

But only used as a buyer lately, not a seller

They told me it was illegal to have bith bank accounts and debit cards in 2 countries at the same time.

Just because there are many us citizens that never venture out of 1 state in their life doesn't mean it's the way the world works.

No. I don’t.
I’m a business seller. Don’t judge everyone by your own standards Hmm

I’ve used it for years as an eBay seller and buyer and also regularly use it for online purchases as it offers protection that I don’t have when using a debit card. Never had any problems. In fact, just recently they get a gold star as my partner had ordered an item costing hundreds of pounds which never turned up despite the money being taken. Partner rang multiple times, emailed and just never got any response or communication as to why they were having trouble delivering said item. In the end I said just open a case with PayPal and get a refund. Within 2 weeks he had his money back. Excellent service.
