AIBU?

To prepare DC for the fact that schools may not open?

It's now looking like full school re-opening is in doubt, unfortunately - I'm so torn about whether to be open with my DC (10 and 8) about this fact or just keep talking as though it's definitely all back to normal in September.

I'm leaning towards the latter, but wondered what others are planning to do? For context, one of my DC is desperate to get back to school, the other is absolutely dreading it, which makes things complicated...

It feels like it will be a huge shock to suddenly have to announce on eg Sept 1st (as last-minute announcements seem to be this government's specialty Hmm) that it won't be happening after all, but on the other hand I don't want them to be worried for a whole month before we know what's actually happening...

limey- haven't seen that on the news. Doesn't say anything on our school website. Is it a local thing?

Well, full, full time school opening is a really bad idea for lots of reasons discussed elsewhere, but I’m not seeing any indication any of the UK governments are moving away from the plan. Why do you think this?

They will open, unless theres a massive spike but I can see them still opening regsrdless

I think there's so many things that could happen at the moment, there is no way we can prepare our children for all of them! So I'd stick with working on the basis that, at the moment, schools will be going back in September. Does the 10 year old have access to their own phone/tablet? Chances are they may be pretty clued up already anyway.

I've not seen this news. I think just carry on as normal and prepare for a September start. Don't make a big thing out of it either way. We don't really talk about school during the holidays as it is so far off. Let them enjoy the summer and worry about it nearer the time chances are things won't change.

I'm not saying anything, dd2 is going in to year 7 and I don't think she could cope with well maybe lets see.

I think they will open, staying open is another matter. If not I'll deal with that at the time.

They will open without a doubt. Whether they are able to remain open is yet to be seen.
I imagine lots of opening and closing / bubbles being sent him to isolate in reality.

I'm just not mentioning it either way, so much can change in a month. Will get school uniform the last week of the holidays.

Schools will open in September. It’s inevitable that classes and year groups and maybe whole schools will close again before October half term when the staff all get ill.

JustFrigginNameChange · 01/08/2020 10:52

I hope to god they open, my child's education should not be sacrificed any longer so that a tiny percentage of people don't get ill (Don't want to get covid? Stay inside).

I'm fed up of it. And I've been working all throughout lockdown, full time, so I've not been able to do all the home-schooling other parents have managed.

Thanks all, I think it's likely best not to mention it until we know for sure.

The government has said school opening is a 'priority' but they also are allowing huge 'bubbles', and we are already seeing a rise in cases now, so I'm not that hopeful.

Have read various articles questioning whether it will actually happen, but of course nothing's official yet.

They will open. The furlough scheme needs to end and most parents need kids in school to be able to work. The spread within schools when key worker children were attending were unheard of so I think it is safe to say it will go ahead. I will point out that this doesn't mean they didn't happen, just that if they did, they weren't publicised due to wanting and needing kids to return and parents to feel safe sending them.
I would never tell my kids they are "definitley" going back though. Just that "the plan" is for them to go back in September.

Personally, for me, I'm telling them there is the possibility that things might be delayed, but it's impossible to tell, because things are very uncertain and change so quickly, so we're going to hope and prepare for the best, but also, for the worst.

And for one of your kids, the best is school reopening, and the worst is it still not reopening, and for the other, the other way round. So everyone can be equally hopeful, happy and miserable, all at the same time. . .

I'll be very surprised if they don't open, but I accept that anything is possible! I certainly wouldn't say anything to them yet.

I'm in Scotland, schools here are all going back w/b 10th August, all schools different first week: part week due to insevice days/phasing in etc , all back full time on 17th August, not heard that England may be going back part time, that interesting,

I've kept it on a "schools are planning to open, but things can change so it might be full time, but it might be part-time, we just need to wait and see" all the way through as things change so quickly.

I’m being open that it might not happen, but that it’s the plan at the moment.

I would say that nothing is certain yet.
I know there is a meeting in August - think it’s the 11th - to decide how to move forward in our area.
But I think everyone needs to accept that there will be changes depending upon the local situation, and even in individual schools.

This.

A ‘plan’ is not a definite, just prepare your DC for the likelihood of any disruptions.

I saw that as a teacher and a parent.
