Can neighbours attach plants to your fence?

Attached to the fence with what looks like thick plastic washing line. It’s my fence I fully own it. CF to not ask first?

Does this also mean I won’t be able to ever change the panels if needed as the plants/shrubs will be supported by my fence? I don’t want it to cause issues later that’s why posting.

They aren't meant to or should ask permission first.

However most people don't think about it, my neighbour has things attached to my fence but so long as they aren't heavy or cause damage, not fussed.

Although another neighbour attached an ugly washing line to the fence and it was dangling over my garden so I kept pushing it back, they eventually got the message!

Are they attached to your fence like hanging pots or climbing plants supported by ties?

My neighbours put up a fence with the ugliest ever concrete and metal support posts on our side, without discussing it with us. Obviously they were completely within their rights to do so.
We immediately pinned (lightweight) trellis to our side and grew climbers up it to hide the view. Technically I think we are in the wrong but they've now moved out and the new owner is a friend of mine and perfectly happy with it being there.

I think it’s climbing plants and yes it could be ties so is this temporary? Or is it something fixed forever?

@PinkSpring sorry I don’t understand - do you mean they should ask or shouldn’t ask permission first?

No. It’s your fence. Ask them to remove them. You can’t maintain it with plants on it. Give them a week and remove them yourself. If they want plants on a fence they can built their own - and they can’t paint your fence either!

I mean, just live and let live. It's not damaging the fence, it's not impacting the function of the fence, it isn't changing anything in your garden...
If you need to replace something then you tell them that is what you're doing and they can take whatever action they need to, if they don't then they risk their plants being damaged.
Honestly, don't lose sleep over this

PinkSpring means they aren't meant to (attach things to your fence) and should ask permission first.

There are quite a few posts about fences bounding about at the moment.

No they’re not allowed to fasten anything to your fence. They can however put their own fence or trellis up right next to yours and attach stuff to that.

They should ask, but if they’re ties it doesn’t affect your fence at all. I’d just let it go.

People don’t tend to do that though.

Thank you everyone. I think it’s a good idea to just leave it and deal with it when or if the fence needs replacing. I just find it incredibly rude to not discuss it beforehand.

I noticed more neighbour dispute threads on here too! What’s going on? To be honest my neighbours have always been thoughtless but I suppose I’m noticing things more now as at home.

I can't see why it really matters, it would be so petty to mention it

Legally? They probably should ask.

In reality, no. What you can't see can't hurt you.

Wow you would hate me op. I’ve tied my climbing and tall plants/flowers on to the fence. I have no idea if it’s my fence or my lovely neighbours. I do know she admires my garden and often comments on it. At the other side my clematis has grown through into the neighbours, despite me trying to pull it back through it has wrapped itself around their pergola. I assume they like it as they have left it there.
Where I used to live my neighbour would often feed my overhanging roses and ivy through her side of the fence. In fact when their house went up for sale, the estate agent made quite a show of the ‘beautiful garden’ Which was infact my plants which had grown through onto their side of the fence.

I can understand people not wanting their fence damaged but the pettiness of refusing to allow people to paint the side of the fence that faces their property blows my mind.

My house was built 25 years ago and neither we nor are neighbours are actually sure who owns the fence between us as we can't find any mention of it in the paperwork. We're hoping to replace it as it's falling down and we will happily pay for the whole lot if they don't want to pay. If they want to paint their side pink I really don't care as it wouldn't affect me at all.

Emily that's what my garden is like! We only have once fence panel that you can see through all of our neighbours climbing plants and bushes. It looks lush.

I don't know what the legal position is, but seriously - who cares?

We have stuff growing all over our fence - we replaced it last year - the plants were carefully taken down and then put back up again - they have survived!
