AIBU?

Do they think we are stupid

Hi,

this is my first post. I have joined in on some discussions and now I'm starting one.

Please take it lightly, it is only meant in fun but nevertheless I am annoyed so here goes....

Covid19. Yes, we all know about it and boy haven't the TV ads really embraced it to sell us a story.

L'oreal because we are all worth it especially now. Eva Longoria saying she isn't ready for grey hair when it's perfectly obvious she is fully grey :)

Virgin media using child actors I have seen in TV adverts to talk about how they connect schools with children. I find this really annoying. Why couldn't they use real people instead of actors pretending to be teachers. Do they really think Joe public is thick?

Supermarkets using Covid to advertise when they must be making money hand over fist telling us how caring they are.

I think I watch too much televison LOL

Why couldn't they use real people instead of actors pretending to be teachers

We know a few teachers who do extra work and acting work on the side so it is quite possible that the “teachers” are really teachers

Just stop watching TV. That's how it all is, actors playing a part

I'm sorry, but Eva Longoria is grey? .....I'm realising how quickly years are flying by if shes grey now.

But yes. Naff big corporations are like WE CARE and acting like they're doing some sort of charity work

Because its an acting role likely to have a script and many takes. Usually actors make the best most efficient candidates, surprisingly.

A bit like why schools dont have actors instead of teachers.

Yes the adverts have been really irritating I agree

She isnt ready for grey hair, so she dyes it 🤷‍♀️

Child actors go to school too 🤷‍♀️

Supermarkets use everything to advertise, easter, christmas, summer... that's just what they do 🤷‍♀️

Step away from the tv 😂

I think that you have just noticed some stuff that is pretty bloody obvious.
Eg Hollywood actors dye their hair, actors pretend to be other people, adverts are manipulative etc.

I guess it was inevitable really that companies would use the pandemic to their advantage in advertising, but I agree it's really annoying. Companies have found any way possible to use it as an advertising angle. The Maltesers ones are really irritating - with the four women on a zoom chat trying too hard to be funny. I also have to mute the Nationwide ones as soon as they come on, I think they're the absolute worst. Maybe I'm just cynical, but every other advert is just so sickeningly earnest it annoys me - as it feels so insincere - I'm sick of seeing slogans like "we're in this together". It really sounds like I watch too much TV but I honestly don't Grin

You have just made me realise how sugary the Xmas ads are going to be this year.
Kevin the carrot will have been delivering to his shielding granny parsnip, John Lewis - the penguin will have swum via China and survived Covid 19, someone will have santa in a mask.

Ain't that the truth!Smile

Anordinarymum haha don't worry - you're definitely not alone!

Oh god, yeah, Xmas adverts are unbearable at the best of times. I imagine there'll be a lot of "tear-jerking" ones that will involve grandparents looking lonely and sad through windows. Looking forward to seeing how bad they get actually. Santa in a face mask Grin

I hate all the “we’re in this together” ads. Ooooh it was hard but we all stayed indoors and did lots of cooking and we got through it together, didn’t we, except for the 44,000 people who died, best not mention them as it won’t help us sell crap to the people who survived.

I watch a heck of a lot of television and can't say I've noticed any of the adverts you mentioned. No doubt I will now.

There's nothing wrong with actors getting some work at this difficult time as long as they are convincing in the role they are playing. Adverts pay well too so they shore themselves up financially until they get another part. You have to remember that actors are generally self employed, as are musicians who haven't been performing recently. If you had an actor playing a musician in an advert, the real musician would be the one making the music so that would be two people earning.

Eva Longoria wouldn't be fully grey; she will have some grey which makes her just right for the L'Oreal advert.

I haven't a clue what you're moaning about but will pay more attention to the advertisements from now on. Supermarket adverts never interest me, I zone out at the best of times.

One of the many reasons I haven’t watched actual tv in years. Online streaming all the way for me.

I can’t stand all the ‘we are here to help you ads’. No you are not you are just trying to make as much money as possible, why not admit it?

The persil one annoys me the most.
Aimed at children directly and showing lots of painting and baking.
Just makes me feel more shit that my DC haven't done crafting and baking (no flour for a start) as I've been juggling home working alongside home schooling and referring arguments so I haven't had magical memories sometimes it's just been pretty shit
Except that doesnt sell washing stuff does it?

I very rarely watch any tv that has adverts but I did see the Eva Longoria one and really liked it as a true representation of how going grey is perfectly normal.

Showing the imperfections is much better than 20 year olds talking about wrinkle creams.

Of course supermarkets will be making money but that doesn't mean they haven't done anything good for society or their employees as well. One doesn't exclude the other.

Eva Longoria is only 45 so may have a few grey hairs, doubt she's fully grey. What about the similar adverts with Davina (who is actually older than Eva so may have more grey) or Holly?

pictish · 07/07/2020 07:49

Nothing to add except I am grey now and I’m not ready for it either so I dye it. Like a lot of women.
What’s your beef with Eva Longoria saying that on an advert in particular?

I agree Op. It's all just so fake and contrived. That's the nature of advertising but the Covid adverts are particularly annoying. The worst is the Nationwide one.

Back in the day an advert used to be "need x? We sell x - why not buy our X?"

Now every advert is awash with phoney emotion, insisting on some kind of story from misery to joy, each one a blatant attempt to massage our emotional needs to one insulting end - that they think we are capable of buying Persil because little Jimmy will love us more and all the neighbours will nod approvingly at our top-class parenting.

Adverts are absolute filth imo
