Where are those who predicted 18 months lockdown now

AfterAte · 05/07/2020 22:18

Firstly I realise that the lockdown in England is only being eases not ended. I am also aware that it is entirely possible there will be a second lockdown necessitated by a second spike. Finally, I am aware of and grateful for the sacrifices of those frontline workers, sad for those who have lost loved ones and both aware and grateful for the sacrifices of those who died in the 2 world wars and in other conflicts.

On 21st March on this website a thread entitled "How long are you expecting this to go on for?" was posted. Several posters speculated that "this" would last 18 months or longer and others also said there would likely be a war as well. I realise there has been terrible suffering and my mental health has been I impacted. However, rightly or wrongly, the lockdown is significantly eased and plans are being made for a near future which can in no way be described as lockdown. I wondered if any of those who predicted 18 months would like to comment here and perhaps admit that they were wrong. I'm afraid I still see their motivation as primarily to drag others down, so I'm not holding my breath, but neither am I prepared not to call them out. They've ruined MN, and they made an awful awful time worse.

Didn't these posters mean 18 months of repercussions and not 18 months of actual lockdown???

They’ve made an awful time worse?! How, did you take their word as gospel?! And how have they ruined MN?!

Not a full answer to your question but I honestly do not believe there will be another nationwide lockdown like the one we have had, one because the economy would never survive it and two most people would probably be even less compliant

Jeez, so some people got it wrong.

Just like those who sneered about CV to begin with and belittled those who were worried.

Don't be so sanctimonious.

(And I'm neither an "18 monther" or a "CV denier")

They're all busily predicting second waves

Well social distancing is likely to last up until that time

And we shall probably have localised lockdowns as other countries tried are

Unfortunately COVID shall be impacting many of our lives for some time to come

I only guessed 6 weeks. What do I know. Still.... Who cares if they guessed 18 months? It was only an opinion.

“I wondered if any of those who predicted 18 months would like to comment here and perhaps admit that they were wrong.

I’m fascinated by this mindset. Is there a word for it? I’m not immune, but it is so marked to see it all spelled out like this - the need some people have for others to admit when they were wrong. For some people, it is really distressing.

I think they were probably right.
Spain and other countries are beginning to lock down again.

What is your point and in what way did they ruin MN?

I hope they were wrong and it is all over in 18 months.

You literally said in your OP that lockdown isn’t over...

Are you always this dramatic? Grin

Catch yourself on. Unless they were advertising themselves as Mystic Meg and you paid them money for their 'predictions', what's your problem?

People say all sorts of things on the internet, whether you take any notice or not is your own choice.

I think most people meant 18 months of social distancing. Other countries are locking down again so it is possible we may have to over the winter. It will depend on how well social distancing is maintained and generally how things go when people start flying and generally going back to day to day living really.

How did some mumsnetters musing about their thoughts on the length of lockdown impact you in any way?

Report
Babs709 · 05/07/2020 22:30

Is this a thread about a thread? Or do you mean there have been general comments all over mumsnet?

I have had to walk away a few times but I wouldn’t say this subject has been any more decisive than others (such as Brexit). OP, if the primary reason for posting is that such hyperbolic comments have affected your mental health then that’s definitely something worth addressing. But I don’t think anyone (on mumsnet!) needs to be admitting they were wrong; this is just a general chat forum.

Don't be so bloody ridiculous. Why on earth would they come and admit they were wrong. They were giving their opinion based on how things were then and how it was impacting on them. Have we all to start going through every thread we've posted on and checking out how it ended up & admit we were wrong

How on earth have they ruined MN??? And as for making a awful time worse we have all been coping the best we can and yes thankfully things are moving faster than expected but you do realise it wasnt the PM or his advisors posting it was just normal people giving their opinions on extra ordinary times

Are you always this overdramatic 🙄

So lockdown isn’t over. It’s been eased and we have no way of knowing how long restrictions of some sort will be in place. They may get stricter or looser in the coming months and go up and down.

So go can anyone say that 18 months was a wrong guess?

If you are taking people on the internets random musings and guesses As gospel and getting distressed when it turns out not to be true than I suggest you step away from online chat rooms as they obviously aren’t for you.

I could say that I think fishnets stockings and pointed cone bras will be the fashion next year. Will you get all offended when it turns out I am wrong?! People say all sorts on here. It’s on you to take it with a grain of salt and to work out for yourself what you are and are not going to believe.

I'm actually a bit worried about how much their opinion effected you OP.

Thinking they have ruined mumsnet, that they made it worse and wanting the to apologise to you and admit they were wrong is not healthy. Do you have support in real life at the moment?

Report
AfterAte · 05/07/2020 22:32

Well there are some revealing responses here. The key point for me is that many posters wilfully did not specify what they meant by "this". It is one thing to say social distancing will last 18 months, another to deliberately not say what aspect would last that long in order to plant the seed in others minds that a full lockdown, or a series of lockdown would last that long.
Some of these posters probably wanted to gain the kudos of bigging themselves up as having had both the insight to see things as they are and the gumption to say an unpalatable truth when in fact they have been disseminating fear and sadness at a time of total and near universal misery.

2 parts of Spain are shutting down again - new wave - that's what is meant - not a one long period of exclusion - I have never read that
