AIBU?

Do you judge people going on foreign holidays right now?

LoganRoy · 30/06/2020 22:04

I don’t know anyone in my life doing this, but I’ve seen reality stars go abroad and then post on social media. Some people have called them out on it. Do you know people doing it?

YABU to judge, the countries need tourism
YANBU to judge, it’s non-essential travel only right now

I don't know anyone going abroad right now. I wouldn't do it. Don't really follow any celebrities.

People can do as they please. We need economy moving.

I don’t know anyone doing it and I won’t bother but it’s good they are keeping things going while I hide indoors.

We aren't going abroad this summer but then we rarely do. I wouldn't judge other people though.

If they've got their own plane/helicopter

Otherwise bonkers

I really want to go abroad. I'm at the end of my tether with lockdown and need something to look forward to. I'm in Scotland so nothing is open. It's awful. A trip would be amazing and I'm planning for one in July.

I really would love to go on holiday right now but I’m not brave enough. If it was only me to consider I’d be off like a shot, as I have covid travel insurance but I have several vulnerable people in my life and I couldn’t live with my conscience if I passed anything onto them due to my relatively selfish need for a holiday.

Everyone must make their own risk assessment though.

Well the country I booked to go to last December is currently part of the airbridge deal. This means that if I don’t go and the flight‘s still running (mid August) , I stand to lose £3k. I will only get my money back if the FCO says it’s unsafe to travel and the flight’s cancelled. Therefore I’ll go and hope for the best.

I’m guessing many people are in the same position as me in that they booked way before anyone had even heard of Covid-19 and will lose a lot of money now we’re allowed to travel again. It would’ve been better if the airbridges had never opened as now we’re in a bit of a crappy situation although to be fair the country we’re going to has far less cases than us and we’ll be self catering in a quieter area than at home. It’s the plane full of other Brits we’re concerned about.

Yes, I am very much wearing my judgy pants!

Squashed on a plane with a load of strangers, then mixing with even more strangers at a destination where a lot of restaurants, attractions etc are shut, all that with no COVID cover on their travel insurance... Utter madness!

I bet they'll be the first ones to complain when we all have to go into lockdown again

Yes. Holidays are a luxury not a necessity and the travel where people will be in close contact with others makes it a high risk activity. Seems madness when we are still prevented from doing so many things in this country of far lower risk. Actually, given how many people still have Covid-19 in this country I am amazed that other countries where they have got it under better control seems to be happy for us to go.

No I wouldn’t judge anyone looking for escape. It won’t be a free for all anywhere, all likely tourist destinations will have safety measures in place. I wonder if the judgers are jealous?

We’ve chosen not to go abroad but that’s because I’m scared of getting stuck were there to be another lockdown, I envy others the balls to go and say fuck it.

I'd love to go away this summer but DH has had an operation postponed due to Covid so we have to stay here until that's done. Gutted. Would be in the next plane out otherwise!

So no, I'm not judging anyone.

Nope, it’s up to people if they want to go and are aware of the risks. There are many precautions they can take.

Yes!
I feel like everyone is going apart from me!
It's not fair (stamps feet and throws a tantrum).

I never understood the massive compulsion with foreign travel although I have been a few places.
Not judging anyone - in a way they are experimenting.
I don't go out much or mix much normally so not too worried.

No judgement from me - particularly if it was booked before all this kicked off and people have decent travel insurance.

We've just rescheduled a summer trip from this year until 2021 - not because I'm bothered about getting covid as think we've already had it - but there's just too many external factors that I can't control over going and don't fancy wearing a mask anywhere.

I would be somewhat annoyed if the government has to bail out people by paying for flights to get home as I think by this stage of the game it's caveat emptor (buyer beware) but as its the same government that is pushing these air bridges, then I suspect some people will go abroad and end up being flown back at great expense.

I booked well before Covid-19.
As of now the country I'm travelling to is open to UK tourists and my flight is operating.
I have travel insurance covering Covid-19

The likes of @AntennaReborn have no right to pass judgement on me.

We are going by ferry in an enclosed cabin then driving staying in a self catering house in a rural area in a country dh from so he has language knows culture etc . Don’t see how that’s hugely different to going to Cornwall self catering but a lot less crowded. If it all went to hell we would just drive home again. Wouldn’t fancy flying or AI hotel but lots of variants to going abroad.

Report
ShinyMe · 30/06/2020 22:34

I'm desperate to go somewhere, anywhere, but no way would I go on a plane right now, or anywhere with crowds. But most importantly I don't want to go anywhere I can't get back from safely under my own steam. So driving distance only for me I think for now. I'd far rather lose 3k than get stuck abroad being quarantined or unwell in a hotel somewhere.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 30/06/2020 22:36

I'm sticking to the rules, and won't be going on any holiday any time soon as think it's going to be hell until it all settles back into some sort of normality!
However, I'm starting to get pig sick of people hoicking their pants up in horreur at others and judging.
As long as people are sensible, it's personal choice.
Didn't know there was commercial holidays now anyway, holidays aren't permitted (UK) so not sure where you are or who you've seen or heard of "jetting off."

That's another thing I just couldn't right now - what if there was another lockdown and you couldn't easily get back?
We're starting to see places shut back down (eg Leicester) - it's not worth the risk in my opinion.

Report
rookiemere · 30/06/2020 22:41

Lemonade lets not catastrophise. Leicester has gone into lockdown again - that's one place, not places. Overall infection rates are falling.

Report
Thisismadness · 30/06/2020 22:42

I just can’t imagine doing it just now. I love holidays and weekend breaks away but it’s only a few months, maybe a year where it’s just not sensible, not massive in the overall scheme of things.
