AIBU?

Flights cancelled but not the villa!!

Our flights to Tenerife for end of August have been cancelled but the Villa has not and if we cancel the villa we will lose the full amount as it us cancelling and not them but we cant actually get there! Obv the flight and villa were booked separately but AIBU to feel it is unfair we will now lose our money unless the Villa company cancel.

The obvious answer is can you claim on your insurance?

It is entirely possible they may still cancel. I've had both a holiday and a hotel for work cancelled on me. August is still very far away and there is no telling what will happen before then.

Alternatively, could you rebook the flights?

Lots of airlines are still flying and many are offering deals at the moment because they are desperate for bodies to fill seats.

Unfortunately, that is the risk when you book separately. You could try contacting your travel insurance but unfortunately the villa is available at present, you can not get there. The owner is fulfilling their contract with you.

I have the same problem and am going to try and claim something back on our travel insurance. Won’t be much though as it was only a villa deposit and our excess is high.

Have you spoken to the villa owners?

Our holiday T&Cs were the same- cancel and lose the money. But after explaining our flight had been cancelled and attaching a screenshot of the cancellation as evidence, they agreed to a full refund. Worth a try?

Failing that, travel insurance or credit card claim?

Have all flights been cancelled? You could book with another airline even if you age to fly to or from another airport? If not speak to the villa company. I had the same this year and they let me transfer the booking to next year. Shit for this year but will be nice next year

Did you pay with credit card?

@NeilTheBaby OMG! Why didn’t the OP think of that?!

Strictly speaking it's not the villa owners problem but you may find they are amenable to moving the date or refunding even though they dont have to.

Sorry, how disappointing. Flowers

We had this issue when Monarch went under 3 weeks before our villa holiday. Obviously different circumstances but alternate flights went through the roof so we reached out to the villa owner personally and he was kind enough to fully refund us. It is worth a try speaking to them.

Which airline has cancelled your flights?

Ryanair seems to be flying from most of the usual airports to most of the popular destinations.

Maybe once the airbridges are announced, there will be more flights available?

It's also possible that if you search different UK airports, and departures a day before/after when you want to leave, there will be flights available. That would obviously involve an extra night/two that you need to book in your destination. Might be better than loosing your whole holiday though.

That's the risk when you book the two parts separately unfortunately. You may be able to claim on your insurance. Can you not find alternative but similar flights?

Thank you for the suggestions, def wish we had not booked villa and flights separately. We do have travel insurance but for obv reasons they are not making it easy, I was surprised given it is 6 weeks away that the flights cancelled as we had started to hope we might make our holiday but sadly not 🙁.

Can you not get flights with another airline?

The villa is still there and allowing you to go so they are fulfilling their end of the contract. You booked separately to try and get it cheaper and this is unfortunately the risk that comes with that.

I know lots of people who have managed to change bookings to same date next year - they may be amenable to that.

Book new flights. I was due to go to Tenerife end of July, flying with BA. They cancelled flights but other airlines going- Ryanair, whizz, easyJet.

I have same problem - should currently be in Tenerife
Jet2.com cancelled flights weeks ago and have had full refund
Accommodation booked through booking.com no refund offered just change dates which is not possible
I am going to try and reclaim through credit card and if no help there will try through holiday insurance (annual policy via my bank)

UPDATE so it turns out BA have cancelled their flights to Tenerife from Gatwick but we phoned them today and they have moved us to flights from Heathrow on the same dates at no extra cost. So fingers crossed no second wave and we can go away 🤗
