To bin off the homeschooling

God I’m probably BU. But bloody hell I've had enough. 14 weeks of working ft, plus trying to fit in twinkl, Oak, Khan etc. Watching my Year 4 get more isolated and sad. Feeing like a loser / outsider when the school send out their weekly newsletter asking Reception to bring in x, y and z and Year 6 to remember their deposit for (insert end of year activity).

Honestly the thought of Monday makes me want to throw things at the wall, and it’s not even Sunday yet! Got a bunch of corrections sent through on last weeks schoolwork which I now have to try and fit in around Skype work calls, deadlines, appraisals. Anyone else just about had it? So tempted to tell child to not worry about it too much and have some screen time.

I don’t need help with coping or with mood or anything like that. I just need to not have two full time jobs.

tomorrow’s another day

We're breaking up for the summer holidays at the end of this coming week. The DC have had enough, I've had enough, DH has had enough. I've told them that so long as they read daily, which they do anyway, that they can do whatever they want with the rest of the day.

England has the shortest summer holidays of anywhere I know.

Everyone pitied their poor English cousins sweltering in classrooms in July.

Get with the rest of the world and start hols now, since this year you get to choose. Wink

It's your child. They can't go to school so if you don't want to educate them, don't educate them. They won't be the only ones who are behind when they eventually go back. Imo there will be a lot of parents who aren't in a position to homeschooltheir children.

Yep don't worry I'm the same. Seriously having to work FT and two school age kids = no work gets done. Can't be dealing with it especially as it's a constant struggle and argument.

Am leaving it and doing odd bits of quizzes over dinner like spelling and times tables. No more....my sanity can't take it!!

Take the Scottish school holidays this year, and switch back when it suits.

Bin it off. It's crisis schooling and a) this many weeks past we can't be expected to keep this up and b) it's impossible if you're attempting to work anyway

You’re the parent not their teacher. End term early and give you all a break.

We are moving from school at home to home education. Letting him do more self directed learning rather than having to do what the school says.

Bin it off! It's obviously not doing you or the DC any good. There are plenty of families who haven't done any school work, so don't feel bad. There is more to life than school!

My dd is year 4 too. She is now completely refusing to do any school work. She was initially enthusiastic. I know what you feel about feeling like an outsider. The fact that some kids are allowed in school and some aren't creates an us and them situation. I feel like my dc isn't worthy enough to be allowed back...I know it's irrational

I'm plodding on... we've been part-time since about week 4 as it's such a shit show.
My 9 yo has various SpLDs.
My 7yo is just not the most educationally mature.
Neither cope well and I don't want to dent their longer term interest in learning or our short term relationship by flogging it relentlessly, so we do about 2-3 sessions a week on Bitesize as they like the videos and activities and writing is a war zone.

I remind myself that there will be plenty doing less than us.
Most are floundering now except the really highly motivated or dutiful.

Bin it off straightaway.
Then get yourself on to all the teacher-bashing threads on here and complain about the appalling provision from schools.
This is the fault of all teachers everywhere. Obviously.

Almost none of my class are doing the work I diligently set every week! Maybe practise a few spellings and times tables and keep up with some reading over the summer.

DS is year 7. His form tutor held a meeting in teams this week (DSs first online session), there was plenty of notice and reminders. 4 out of 30 turned up, 3 including DS admitted they aren’t really doing much of the work set.
Seems like many have already given up.

School term has finished for my kids, so I realise it's easy for me to say, but if it hadn't I'd be sticking at it solely because I don't want them to think they're on holidays when they're not.

We do lots of informal learning... I've just explained to the DCs why my gin bottle is cold and wet at the bottom and warm and dry at the top. Good science is that, especially in DH's line of engineering Grin

Could you explain that to me in scientific terms? Because I'm not sure that I know the science behind that myself!

The main things to do are

A bit of reading every day. It can be anything - a book, a newspaper article, research facts about whatever they are interested in. Only 10 minutes a day is better than nothing.

Maths - practice times tables, either via pen and paper, or apps like times tables Rockstar/hit the button or even Alexa can do a quick test. Only 5-10 minutes.

We’re off on holiday next week and I’m not doing anything while we’re away! My childs school breaks up one week early so I think I’ve only got three weeks of home education left!! Can’t wait.

Homeschooling when people are working was only ever a band aid. This current situation is absurd. I'm jealous and my children bewildered seeing the Y1 Y6 whatever kids in their uniforms around 330 when we've been at home with my career going down the toilet as they learn so little. I can't do it. They're disadvantaged Single parent with high responsibility WFH job. Every day placing strangers needs over my children's needs for my attention and my tuition as if I'm a fucking teacher even if I had four spare hours a day to help them. Inequitable. Awful. it's not fair. But hey pubs open. Education has been entirely neglected and childrens education ignored.

@MinnieMousse that’s why I feel I should carry on somehow, the teachers are doing their utmost in a no win situation. I feel awful that they diligently set work if most people ignore it.

Agree you should just bin it now. I'm going to stop nagging DS after Tuesday (last assessment day) as I'm just so tired having two full time jobs. I'm lucky that DS is year 9 but the whole thing is so mentally draining.

Year 9 here and seeing it through to bitter end. To be fair he's just getting on with it when he starts (c2-3 hours a day depending on subjects). Be glad when 17th July arrives tho...!

Don't worry Lemons. I'm sure we all appreciate how tough it is for parents at home. Most other countries have holidays of 2 or 3 months and kids there manage when they go back to school. Just do what works for you. My DC are in their schools 4 days a week now but I am doing some maths and reading comprehension on the day I'm home because they don't do a great deal at school (mixed age bubble so it's difficult to manage everyone) and because I know they will probably spend almost every day playing Roblox when the holidays do start so giving them work keeps them off it for a bit longer!
