AIBU?

Would you learn to drive right now?

Like many others, I’ve been working from home since the start of the pandemic. I usually leave the house at 6am and get home at 7pm. I’ve been desperate to learn to drive for years but have never had the opportunity. I’m always either working or looking after my children. However the current situation has released some time meaning I could potentially do it now...But would it be completely mad? The instructor and I would obviously wear masks but he will have been exposed to people in close quarters on a daily basis. I already worry a lot about health and fear this could make me even worse. Plus the lessons would be two hours long. Two hours in a mask could be too much, surely?

Anyway, just wanted to see what others think. Would you do it? Is this an opportunity not to be missed or AIBU to even be considering it?

Perhaps not yet...depends on your individual situation

It's tricky, isn't it. Are you or any member of your immediate family medically vulnerable? If not I'd probably do it. Keep the windows open.

DS was learning to drive before lockdown. His instructor messaged last week to say he still isn't allowed to start back, no date been set. My friend's DD has just had her rescheduled from April to July test postponed again. I'm not sure it's an option for you just now OP. Unless it's a friend/relative.

I don't think driving instructors are currently allowed to teach unless the student is a key worker with a test booked.

Driving lessons and theory tests to restart from 4 July.

Ds1 has been having lessons since the start of the year and his instructor has messaged him about restarting, we were just discussing it at teatime - he isn't sure about it yet.

Came back to say DS just told me it was announced today, though his instructor hasn't messaged yet.

My son is "currently" learning. He has his first lesson since March in the second week of July.

Thanks everyone. Yes, it looks like lessons can go ahead from 4th July. I’m just not sure...Not driving during lockdown wasn’t a great experience (supermarket shops etc) and it made me realise that I really need to do something about it...but not at any cost, obviously! I’ve been quite nervous throughout the pandemic so I’m not sure this is the best thing for me at the moment but equally I don’t want to let the opportunity pass me by and wind up kicking myself further down the line when I no longer have any time to do it.
