Turn my memory foam mattress into a normal one please!

Sorry posting for traffic. Is there anything we can add on top to our memory foam mattress (tempur) to make it feel more like a normal once? It's sweaty and I miss the feel of a normal pocket spring mattress. Thanks

A normal one not once

As far a I know you can get them that will help with the airflow so shouldn't be as sweaty but nothing that will make it feel like a sprung one.

Hmm thank you. Can't afford new mattress. Anyone else?

Is it entirely memory foam or does it have a layer that you could hack off with a carving knife?

I wouldn't have another foam mattress if you paid me, sweaty horrible things. I binned mine and bought the cheapest mattress after less than 6 months.

Maybe get a luxurious mattress topper from a decent store/website. Preferably made from natural materials but a really decent man made one at least.
Otherwise get a new mattress

I warned OH the memory foam mattress for the spare bed would be sweaty. He sleeps on it when working

There is now a silk topper on it

We had the same problem with our super expensive memory foam mattress and fixed it by putting large cotton airflow blankets (the ones like babies have with the holes) under the bed sheet. Works a treat. Had to get two single bed size ones though .

OP Google airflow mattress toppers... There's a few different brands but they make it so much better.

I have no advice but solidarity here. I hate our memory foam topped mattress. It angers me that I can't flip it over (the other side of the mattress is awful, I've tried). It is just not firm enough for my liking. DH loves it but I'm picking the next one!

If you did want to spring for a mattress, this Ikea Hyllestad one is great. I have the Medium Firm. Bargain for £250. They have a 90 day guarantee. We fit the Firm but I found it too firm. They switched it to the Medium Firm with no issues.

hadn't thought of that; I have a memory foam topper - loved it when I first got it, but it is likely to be making me hotter in this weather.

Mind you, my Dyson fan/humidifier arrived today - heaven set up next to my bed.
Except the cat likes it to, so I have a purry furry lump between me and the new fan.

@stopfundinghate can you sell it and buy something else? I did as I just couldn't get on with mine. I only lost about £100, I replaced it with a sprung mattress with memory foam top, it's so much better.

laid in bed not able to sleep because hot and thinking about this. Started leaping around removing memory foam topper at about 4am replacing with an old cotton one - and an Aldi dog cooling pad on one side, under the sheet. better, but still hot.
Googled cooling toppers.Abt to get dressed and try the roof garden.

Airflow looks interesting. But would it make the bed very soft? We prefer a medium to firm mattress... Sorry if that's picky!!

I've just bought a 5cm wool mattress topper, it's amaaazing. It's been really cool in this weather too.

Latex topper, it's springy and temperature neutral if it's 100% natural latex.

I get really hot at night and did not like the memory foam at all but i found simply putting a quilt on the mattress and then a sheet worked fine for me

stopfundinghate Fri 26-Jun-20 11:06:33

I've been looking at wool! Would you mind sending me a link please @ILikeyourHairyHands

It was this one from John Lewis. I had exactly the same problem with a sprung memory foam topped mattress and it's transformed my sleep.

I second a latex topper if you can find them. All our mattresses are latex and they are as comfy as foam but not at all hot.

stopfundinghate Fri 26-Jun-20 12:22:56

@ILikeyourHairyHands that's exactly the one I was considering, so helpful to hear your opinion on it too thank you! Do you put a mattress protector on top? We usually use waterproof protectors here due to the little kids (which probably makes the heat even worse!) Do you think a normal protector would be fine? Would it be easy to clean if ds had a wee on it?! Thank you, sorry for all the questions it's quite an investment but I'm super excited!

I haven't put anything other than a sheet on top, my children are well past the peeing in our bed stage! I just get it outside for a good airing once a month (and beat it like a rug!). It seems quite happy with that. Its been a really worthwhile investment, much cheaper than a new mattress (although I'll continue to use it when we do change the mattress as I've found it brilliant for menopausal night-sweats and it's very, very comfortable).

Thanks so much, I'm ordering grin

Wool sounds interesting - I used to get Abel and Cole deliveries, and my cat still loves boxes lined with the fleece liners that they used to pack meat and fish in to keep it cool.
Will take a look.
