I've found a lovely ocean scented candle in my cupboard today. I want to light it but i've always had a fear of lighters, somebody else normally does it for me Blush

Be brave! Do it!

Unless you're planning on using a flame thrower, in which case your fears are justified Wink

Don’t do it!
You have a fear. You sound alone at home. I would be worried if you get into a panic attack with a candle on.
Wait until someone is there with you so you can light it up with them at presence.

Can you use a kitchen match? They are long which gives you plenty of time to strike, light the candle, and put it out. If you’re going to use a lighter hold the candle sideways and the flame won’t go near your fingers :)

You will be fine, just pull up any sleeves and hold it close to the wick

You need one of those long candle lighters. You can get them from supermarkets.

Kebab skewer? Hold candle with tongs over hob?

Go to a local pharmacy and get some potassium permanganate crystals and a bottle of glycerine. Mix them together into a paste on top of the candle and step back. After a short while it will self-ignite and you won't have to use a match or a lighter. You'll get lovely purple flames as a bonus

It's really hard to set your finger alight, you'd really need to heat it long enough for the fat to melt then wick into something for it to burn, and most people don't have particularity fatty fingers. You'd have realised long before then.
Are you sure you are old enough to be playing with candles?

I got an electronic candle lighter from Amazon. Life changing! It’s like a tiny taser 🤣

You wouldn't set your finger on fire, come on now.

If you are really that afraid, you can light a piece of spaghetti so that you can hold the lighter more upright while you're doing it, to save you from setting your flesh ablaze.

I’m scared too!! I thought I was the only person in the world, I second spaghetti and the hob!

I always use spaghetti. Light the spaghetti and use as a ‘long’ match.

If the candle is new and hasn't been used before, gently straighten the wick then hold the candle at 90° to light it and stand it up carefully and quickly. That way you can hold the lighter straight up rather than risk it catching on your thumb.

But how would I light the spaghetti in the first place Confused

OP do you genuinely believe it's physically possible to set your finger on fire?! Do you actually believe that?

🤣

Report

Light it in a sink so if you do set fire to your finger (you won't) you can easily douse it and the candle.

I had a lighter fear once after a house fire. I forced myself to learn when I was gifted an expensive candle set. It took about an hour for me to light the bloody things but I managed eventually. I done it over the kitchen sink so if I dropped it there isn’t anything flammable. You might find matches better, I don’t use a lighter at all now I always end up with a burnt thumb Blush
