Taking a day off school - AIBU

So - I've seen that a campsite near our home is soft opening from 4th July - renting out the 4 bell tents it has in situ. The weekend slots have all gone - but I thought it would be really nice to get out of the city and spend some time in nature. T

he kids are 5, 7 and have worked really hard during lockdown. The 5 year old is now back in school but they are mirroring homelearning available on an app. 7 year stuck doing stuff with me while I work.

I've suggested we just take a Monday off so we can spend the Sunday night away in one of those tents as a treat. It would be nice to go while it is so quiet and we don't have to worry so much about SD with less people around. Husband is very anti the idea - saying that missing this day of school will be detrimental to the 5 year old and that having just got him back in why would we give it up. My thinking is that it is one day away, it'll be a nice treat, and they've done every single thing they've been asked of homeschooling so it's not a massive deal. It also feels like an opportunity we wouldn't usually have (the school is super hot on attendance).

AIBU? I really want to take them but i don't particularly want to have a massive argument about it.

Well it’s not like they haven’t had any time off this year anyway and the work is the same so not sure what the difference is as lots of children still aren’t at school, as long as the work is done I don’t see the problem, if I could get a cheap holiday without the faff I’d be gone with mine

It’s one day and the child actually missing school is only 5. Not all children who can go back to school are back in school because it’s been left up to parents whether to send them or not. No child is doomed to educational failure for the sake of one day off, especially not a 5 year old and especially not in the current circumstances.

Go and have fun!

(FWIW I’m generally pretty against term time holidays but there’s a time for common sense to apply!)

It's a bit weird going away for one night on a Sunday though. It might not be much of a treat, especially if the weather is poor. A lot of disruption for not very much of a break. You could have a nice day out in the country on the Sunday and have almost as much fun.

The school can't really say much but it doesn't sound like a great plan to me.

Thanks - we never take them out at term time usually. I suspect it is because he doesn't want to go camping! I've offered to take them solo but I think he doesn't want to be the fun sponge and has a bit of FOMO.

My only concern is everything will be crazy busy first weekend of opening but it might be the opposite

Go! One night camping not too far away is perfect. Just a little fun adventure. I would absolutely do it.

I would have thought this experience has shown 5 year olds don't really need to be in formal education so he's being a bit ridiculous over one day.

@bigchris that was one of the reasons i wanted to go as this campsite is only opening 4 spots to begin with - so it will be much quieter.

The weekend spots have gone already - hence the sunday night. Not having to put up a tent (it would be already in place) I thought we could rock up - have some food on the campfire - play some games etc then have a walk and head home on Monday. The drive is short so is a small mini escape. I'm so fed up of walking them around all the disgarded PPE in the streets it would be nice to have a bit of time with nature!

Why wouldn't you stay for longer? One night sounds pointless - I'd go for a week least Grin

I've let my kids have the odd day off home learning. In fact the schools told us it was OK.

Provided the school doesn’t pull your place then I would go for it

Would you tell the school that your child will be away from school because you're going camping or would you say they were ill? Just asking because I think if you say your child is not well they might not be allowed back for a while. I think even d&v is 48 hours at our school

I'd do it.
