to ask these police officers to keep the noise down?

Something really awful has happened across the street from me. We have a police car in our drive and have done for 48 hours. 4 police officers stood outside 24/7 in order to prevent people from entering a certain perimeter. Very unsettling and I feel awful for the poor person who has been so badly assaulted.

This now sounds extremely trivial, but for the past 2 nights, the officers have been chatting all night, really quite loudly. Shouting occasionally when bantering with each other, laughing loudly and joking etc. It's kept me awake for two nights solid.

Should I accept that it's a pretty shit job for them to be out there stood in the same spot for hours on end and let them have their fun? Or ask them to try and keep the noise down?

They woke me up every hour last night (they're about 20 yards from my window) but I can't help but feel petty....

Yanbu at all. If something really bad happened there it's more disrespectful to be bantering loudly in the first place than it is to ask them to quieten down a bit.

I also feel very nervous as a black woman as being labelled as having a chip on my shoulder or being the angry black lady (neither of those things are true). Not sure if that's ridiculous but stems from current issues I guess.

Yanbu at all-they probably don’t realise how loud they are.

Don't know why I find it so hard to approach police officers. If it were the public i would have probably shouted 'keep the noise down' out of the window by now!

You don't need to ask angrily. Perhaps offer a cold drink (assuming you're in the UK and it's hot), then just ask them to keep
It a bit quieter.

You could call the station and just ask them to pass the message on. Tell them that you're kids keep getting woke up or something and that you appreciate that they are there to do a job and you respect that blah blah. I had the same with the police when there was an incident in our old close. They chapped me up 3 times in the middle of the night to ask if I'd heard anything etc. I was fuming but obviously too scared to say so! 😂 they stood out there with their radios blaring and talking so loud. 2 other neighbours had a fight because one of them wouldn't keep his music down and kept telling us all to FO. The guy who wouldn't keep his music down got leathered at his own front door. lol

YANBU. They should be more respectful of you and your neighbours, especially given something so horrible has happened in your street.

They're police officer, not dictators.

Just tell them they've been keeping you awake and ask them to keep the noise down.

You don't have to sound angry.

I agree with PP suggestion. Take them some cans of soft drinks this evening, quick chat and mention if they could please be quieter overnight.

I'll chat to them tonight if they're loud again. Not sure police would take a drink from a member of the public. Especially in lockdown. But no harm in asking I guess!

Individuals dealing with terrible things often present as being insensitive by things they say or"joke about". This is a way they cope. Ask ambulance personnel/fire fighters and yes police. Having said that I do think you could explain that they are disturbing you by the level of noise.

Offer them a drink, ask them how they are and ask them to keep the noise down.

Hi, police officer here! Nope, you are not being unreasonable to ask them to keep the noise down. They should be being respectful and aware of their surroundings whilst on a scene guard. Fair enough to chat quietly to pass the time, but shouting and bantering in the middle of the night whilst stood on the street is not on.

Either ask them to be quiet directly or speak to the Force they’re from.

They should f be talking loud enough to keep you awake. Unless your windows are open then they must be taking loud. Ring the polic station and explain
