AIBU?

To wonder if I'm the only person who won't be sending kids to school in August

AIBU to wonder if I'm the only one who won't be sending DC back to school in August.

I initially thought "wait and see", but now the details are coming out about what it will be like. And my instinct is telling me to keep them off until normality resumes. Or something closer to normality.

Homeschooling has been going well. I'm not worried about their education.

I do worry about the lack of social interaction, but feel on balance this need wouldn't be satisfied adequately until things are a bit more relaxed anyway.

I wouldn't be expecting any work to be set for my kids, I'll take care of their home learning.

I cannot be the only one feeling this and thinking this?

Or is everyone going back in August/September?

My dc will be back as soon as the fucking government says that they're no longer banned from the school premises.

I'm quite angry as you may be able to tell Wink

Is it the layout/social distancing rules you're worried about Op? I'm in England and my 4 and 6 year old are back in school now. They're loving get it. Are you in Scotland?

I'm happy for DD to go as she goes to a very small rural school with buckets of both indoor and outdoor space. If it were a matter of a class of 30 squeezed in to a too small room and the fields long sold off for housing, I'd have more concerns.

Why would you be the 'only' one?

& I'm pretty certain some people have to go to work, so they don't have the option to stay at home. Hence, their children have to go back to school

If you are sure you are right, why is it anyone else's business? Are you seeking to have your decision ratified?
I think you are absolutely wrong but they are your children so do what you want.!

Hi OP. You have to decide based on the facts and your instincts. IMO going to school with some changes in place will be much more normal than being at home, and will bring benefits such as friendship and sociability. Since the outbreak only 36 children have been in ICU, and given that we're well past the peak the risks of school are very low, and the benefits are high. But it is your opinion here that counts and I won't criticise your decision either way.

Its always been your right to homeschool and I expect many others will feel this same as you. Crack on.

Mine are going back the second they’re allowed.

Lol no. I mean you do you for sure but mine will be going back. My five year old is DESPERATE to go back.

In Scotland yeah.

All I hear is kids DCs loving school.

I don't dispute that. I'm sure many of them probably are.

But I'm also sure it's anxiety inducing for many other kids. And I never seem to hear about them on mumsnet.

I don't like social distancing, makes me anxious and negates any joy of seeing my friends. I'd rather message them and then see them in person when we can behave normally. If I feel like this, there must be some children affected by it.

I also don't think it will be safe once lock down has eased (at first)

I do think normality will resume at some point.

I want to live as I am until then.

You do realise that it will be next year before schools go back normally in Scotland. So 18+ months at home, no chance

If your children are happy with home schooling and you are able and willing to provide them a decent education then knock yourself out. Meanwhile, myself and many others will continue to press for kids being back at school full time without social distancing as that is what is best for my children.

Ok but you shouldn’t hold your kids back because of your own anxieties. No one like social distancing but it is what it is and you can’t just put your whole life (and your kids’ lives) in hold because you don’t like it.

BillyWilliam - I'm curious. Is that unreasonable?

I can't be the only person feeling this way. Indeed I'm not. I'm interested to know how much of a minority I'm actually in.

Where are you getting this from?? I think they’ll be back to normal by October.

I’m assuming you already don’t work for a living given you have the time to home educate your children full time for the next potentially several years until a vaccine is found? ?

If not I hope you’re not expecting the state to financially support this notion?

18+ months at home is not a daunting prospect.

Besides, school is for learning, not socialising, they're not going to do much socialising anyway isolated in their groups of ten.

When sailing club and rugby are back on, we'll join in again .

@Cabinfever10. There is no reason to think that these bonkers blended learning plans will remain in place for the whole year. It will destroy many children’s academic prospects and cause such a leap in adverse outcomes and poorer mental health for the already struggling children.

I think they should go back as normal asap with no social distancing. Risks are tiny for children. Death rate is very low in Scotland and England. This is just ridiculous now. My dd cries often that she misses her friends. This is so cruel. Ill never forgive this government for what they've done to children. Oh and as for their proxy letters preaching to me about how important attendance is...what an absolute joke.

You’re holding your children back off school because of your own aniexties. Not cool OP.
What if Covid 19 doesn’t dissapear? You going to keep them home for the next decade? YABU.

But I'm also sure it's anxiety inducing for many other kids. And I never seem to hear about them on mumsnet. I don’t think it is. I think it’s more a case of adults projecting on to their kids and thus making them anxious.

Oh and, it was said recently that Scotland weren’t expecting to go back to normal for at least another year.

Drivingdownthe101 · 23/06/2020 10:37

Mine are already back (reception and year 1 in England) and really enjoying it.
But it’s up to you what you do. Home education has always been an option. You may have to deregister them from their schools depending on the situation at the time (or have Scotland said attendance is optional from August?) but that’s completely your decision.

Report
Bartlet · 23/06/2020 10:37

By your comment about sailing and rugby club I assume that you are well funded by your dh to stay home and play teacher.

If that’s good for you and your children then great but don’t let your anxiety hold your kids back.
