Do you remember your first day at school? Or first year?

I just seem to have been reading a lot of school based threads this evening, so this popped into my head.
I don't remember the first day, but I remember the night before.
I remember cornflakes boxes and a sand box and drawing houses and Mrs X correcting our copies and her glasses and the red pen.
But I don't remember my first day at school.

My only long term ex, lived about 300 yards from his school. On his first day, he escaped and ran home to his Mum. The Head teacher came high tailing it after him and he was lured back.

I remember that the first thing Mrs H wrote on the blackboard was 'The'!

I do recall where the classroom was in the school. I think I thought Mrs H was pretty ancient, so she was probably in her mid-40s! Grin

Yes my twin made me swap name stickers and I was ushered into the wrong class and my socks kept falling down. I did not want to go back the next day.

I remember before I started school we went looking at a steiner school which looked so fun but they didn't send me there! I remember the first day and my mum was leaving and I thought I was going with her but obviously I was not! I remember sitting with the class and they were all singing the alphabet and I didn't know it.

I'm 29 and remember my first day at primary school.

My dad took me - not sure why, assume I was starting at a different time to my older siblings - and I remember finding my coat peg and tray. The picture on mine was a red, yellow and green stripey ball.

I don't remember much more of Reception tbh.

Vaguely. I remember being able to read the books the teacher used as a test. (Roger Red Hat, Billy Blue Hat etc). I got upset I could only take one home.

Yes I do, we all had to queue with our mums outside the headmasters office and he gave us all a name badge with a picture on it that started with the letter of our name. Then when our mums took us to the classroom our pegs had those same pictures on so that we could easily find our own. I also remember the day the term before that we were allowed in for the afternoon for a sort of taster day and I played with a water table that never saw the light of day again.

I also remember where my class was - it was the first one you came across - also the last class room I graduated from when they built an extension on.

Yes, I was thrilled to be finally going to school with my two older brothers but had misunderstood and thought we'd all be in the same class Hmm. God know why.
The shine went off it a bit at that point.

I can picture the classroom & my table and the lovely old lady teacher (she probably wasn't) but not my 1st day.

I remember going from the house to the car on the first day and my mum taking a photo. The sun was in my eyes. I remember my teacher showing me where the toilet was and I was afraid to go in the toilet for some reason. Can’t remember why. From the rest of the year I remember finger painting. It was very rare and a real treat. Also remember the jar of jelly babies we got to pick one out of for good behaviour. Are teachers allowed to give out sweeties now? Remember the little play corner where there was a play house with a little mattress. I always loved pretending to be a baby so I could nap Grin (no change there!) and there were fake foods and drinks. A bottle with orange paint inside it. Taped up cereal boxes.

I remember making my first friend on my first day at nursery and a few other snippets. Bit of primary school too, but more of middle and high school.

I remember very clearly the time I was Mary in the nativity in reception - the peak of my theatrical career! - and the time I was violently sick in the classroom sink 😳 odd the things you hold on to.

I do remember my first day at school; I remember nursery and playgroup too (not the first day), I have a vivid memory of childhood. The teacher read us Humpty Dumpty, and asked us what he was doing while sitting on the wall.

I barely remember anything before year 2. School and home life. Must be blocking out something tragic.

I'm mid 50s but remember my first day at school. My dad took me and we were all in the dining hall and had to leave our parents and walk up the stairs to our teacher when our name was called. I remember being scared and being shown my peg which had a ladybird sticker on it and that's about it.

I remember being with my (male) best friend. Mrs R told him to go and play with the boys and me to go and play with the girls. We wanted to play together and ended up playing with the sand tray as it seemed to be the only thing that was for girls and boys :(

Yes, it was in Cyprus, in a school for military children. My teacher was called Miss Esherley and she had blonde hair in a bun. The weather was so nice that our trays with our things in were stored outside the classroom. There was a playground in the centre and the classrooms opened out onto it with long verandahs joining everything together. It was idyllic really, looking back. We'd go to school between 7-12 because it got too hot in the afternoon and my Mum would come and pick me up with my sister in her pram and take us straight to the pool. You could order and pay for a jam, cheese or ham roll for your mid morning snack but my Mum didn't let me very often as it was too expensive every day. This was late seventies and I definitely remember that seventies golden glow. Everything seemed brighter then.

I have an early school memory of everyone having a turn to be blindfolded for a game of “guess who’s speaking in a funny voice”. But that wouldn’t have been the first day. Also that when we walked from the classroom to the assembly hall for PE, we were always told to put on our shoes without socks, before doing PE barefoot.

I remember my reception teacher had shoulder length hair in a headband tucked behind her ears and the sides falling forward over it . I thought it was the cleverest hairstyle ever invented.

@YgritteSnow the schools haven't changed much... That sounds very similar to my DDs Reception year a few years ago (in Cyprus)

I remember the children who was crying was giving smarties to keep them quiet so I pretended to cry too.

I also remember my first book was called Look. And that was the only word all the way through.

I remember a few things. I remember wearing a long blue coat and seeing a girl in the same one and being glad about that for some reason. I remember the teacher reading out everyone's names and looking round to see who was who. I remember at the end of the day running out and showing my mum a drawing I had done and she seemed to not think much of it, though she did keep it so I guess she did like it.
