To travel by train to go shopping?

The closest shopping City to me is 25 mins by train.
I'm itching to go.
I don't drive so would have to go via train.
Aibu to do this?
I was going to do this morning but changed my mind.
I'm really unsure

How busy is the train? What can you do to make if 'safer'? Like mask, carry hand sanitizer, not touch anything. What are you actually going to shop for?

The trains are dead around here.
I have hand san and a mask.
I need to shop for clothes for my mum/underwear /basics etc
Also basics for myself too.
I do want to look around the shops too,just for a bit of normality really.

Make sure the shops are open though. Lots still aren't. Our town centre is still mostly shut. Some shops opened just for the weekend

If you can't drive then the journey is essential isn't it? The powers that be cannot reasonably say that only those with cars can go to the shops!

Wear a face covering and avoid the "rush hour" such as it is.

Everyone has to make their own risk assessments. If you feel comfortable, do it. Don’t listen to other people - if the shops are open, it’s your choice.

I took DC1 for new shoes today as his old ones were pinching his toes. Distancing and a good dose of hand sanitiser, and I think the benefits outweighed the risks. Plenty of other people were there but it was all well organised (retail park) and people were being sensible.

The trains company by me is still saying they’re running for essential travel only. Fancying a wander round the shops isn’t essential travel (I’m assuming if you desperately needed something you’d have said so).

If the train companies are saying they’re open for general travel then crack on. If they’re still saying for essential travel only then don’t.

Exactly. So even though the powers that be haven't said that only people with cars can go shopping, the transport companies' only essential journeys rule means that in reality it is only people with cars who can do non-essential shopping.

I walked past our train station today and there is a big (very big) sign up saying essential travel only. Not to travel on this train unless it is for work.

So I guess in my area trains are not yet for non essential travel.

Absolutely go you don't need to ask anyones permission. I have been up and down on trains all through lockdown, before and after compulsory masks, its super quiet and actually quite pleasant. Still alive and very much healthy! No one enquires where you are going or checks tickets, in fact no one goes near you, its actually a very safe environment at present.

Perhaps avoid the rush hour, I would have done that pre Covid anyway!

@Browzingss how do they know what people are travelling for though? As far as I'm aware they're not stopping people asking where they are going.

Yeah, they don’t seem to be policing it. From social media it seems that they’re relying on passengers to “do the right thing”, but passenger numbers are steadily increasing so they might start. It’s getting hard to social distance on board now and many aren’t wearing masks. Train companies still haven’t reinstated all scheduled train services either.

I think leisure travellers are obvious if people are carrying shopping bags from non essential retailers or are dressed to go “out out” as opposed to work. I’ve seen lots of people, men and women, freely swigging alcohol too. But again on board staff don’t seem to be fussed.
