That's not Chinese or Japanese, it's 'confused face'

It looks Chinese.

It's Chinese.

It says my tattoo artist thinks I'm an idiot.

He’s clearly a moron.. we’ve discovered tonight that he has no idea. Completely ridiculous I know Grin

Strangely invested in knowing what it means!

It's a character used in both Chinese and Japanese. In Japanese one pronunciation is 'yado', meaning inn or lodging. Another pronunciation is 'juku'.

This is why people should never get tattoos in languages they don't read...

My DS speaks Japanese. He's still asleep (we're in Australia) but I'll ask him when he wakes up.

We insisted he take Japanese as an option. He complains all the time that it isn't useful. I'm looking forward to proving him wrong Grin.

In Chinese (Mandarin), there are various meanings and pronunciations: www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=%E5%AE%BF

Ladies, thank you so much. He’s now trying to contextualise ‘lodging’ as ‘spend the night with me’ which is also completely ridiculous. What a dick he is Grin

So your OH has unknowingly being walking around tattooed with the word “hotel” (more or less)? 😂

X post.

What did he think it said?

At least it's not TravelLodge

Yes he has, for more than a decade Grin he thought it said something about home being where the heart is. I’m laughing lots this evening Grin

Does he even remember what he thought he was asking the tattoo artist for, or was he drunk at the time? I am wondering if they looked up life or live or something like that? That character is also used as part of one Japanese compound word meaning to live, but more in the sense of 'I live at number 15 xxx street' than the 'live life to the full' type sense.

So your DH has a Chinese tattoo but doesn’t know the meaning of it? Why would he?

Report
Helterskelter15 · 20/06/2020 22:37

Apparently he doesn’t mind as it’s a ‘nice symbol anyway’ GrinGrin

Old lodge / home’s where the heart is, something got lost in translation but I can see a definite link!

Although I’ll be honest, I was hoping it would be something a bit more exciting.

Meh, it goes both ways. Lots of Chinese people in China I see walking around with English sayings on their shirts and no idea what it means. Nonsense sayings too like
“Cat rules” and “Get Joker”

Just showed it to my younger son's father (Japanese).

Apparently it means like a shitty hotel, motel type place 😂

He is pissing himself laughing and muttering to himself.

He says "why did her husband have that tattooed?!?!" and just keeps shaking his head and chuckling.
