AIBU?

Dishwasher emptying/filling

Please settle a ‘dispute’ between DP and me. When emptying and filling the dishwasher, do you empty the whole thing of clean dishes then fill the whole thing with dirty dishes OR empty the bottom layer first and then fill the bottom layer, repeating this process with the top layer. Not important I know-but I really would like some outside perspective because I can’t get on board with his way and he can’t get his head around mine.

YABU-empty it all then fill all
YANBU-empty bottom, fill bottom, empty top, fill top.

I always empty it all but there is generally only a couple of mugs or glasses to go back in anyway .

I empty everything before I fill. I could get on board with emptying and filling the bottom first, especially if there’s not much room. Just don’t start putting dirty things in the top when there are clean things in the bottom.

Empty it all then fill it all. Bit weird to be handling clean then dirty then clean dishes

Empty it when it’s finished then fill it with dirty stuff and put it on when it’s full.

Definitely empty it all, then fill it. As I put it on at night after loading my dinner things, in the morning when it is being emptied, apart from a few pieces of cutlery, there are items for the top basket only, so no dilemma! I would not want to put any dirty dishes in while clean ones are still in it.

Get the clean dishes out before putting dirty stuff in, of course!

Although, in our kitchen the dishwasher has to be closed for the plates and pans cupboard to be opened. So there's a lot of opening and shutting and if the bottom rack's full of dirty stuff, I can easily imagine that splashing some dirt onto the top rack.

Which is your way OP? I'm in the empty all the clean stuff before putting in anything needing washing.

I've never ever seen anyone not totally unload the dishwasher before filling it!

I’ve never seen anyone do anything other than empty it all first.

The only time saving to the other way is the pulling out of the drawer twice.

But I’m not sure it would make a real difference to the end result or the time taken.

Definitely empty the whole dishwasher before putting dirty things back in. Any other way would be madness

Empty it all in the morning. Fill it throughout the day whenever things are used. Put it on before I go to bed to run overnight and repeat in the morning.

My way is the ‘empty everything’ way. I didn’t want to say to start with in case it caused bias! Apparently the fact that so far everyone has agreed with me is irrelevant, according to DP, because ‘Mumsnet doesn’t count’. He doesn’t like being wrong Grin

Empty it all. Who on earth does anything else?!

But plates can only go in the bottom rack and cups/glasses go in the top, his way is completely ridiculous.

I do it the same way as your husband because I think it's more efficient. Sounds like I'm in a minority but I wouldn't have thought it was that important.

Depends on counter space for me. I usually end up having to empty the dish rack before emptying the dishwasher.

If there are a good amount of dishes next to the sink waiting I will empty the bottom rack (which is usually pans, plates, and cutlery) and then put the dirty dishes in the bottom rack before emptying the top. If there isn’t many dishes needing to go in then I empty the dishwasher completely before putting them in.
