People from South Asian backgrounds were 20% more likely to die than white people. Other minority ethnic groups did not have a higher death

They're 12 years younger on average, that's a massive difference, and they tend not to have dementia, obesity or lung disease, but very high levels of diabetes.

Is this to do with diabetes? If so I thought it could be controlled through diet i.e. carbs etc? I would be interested to read why this is - is it genetics, living conditions, work conditions?

These are South Asian people in the UK only? Are South Asian people in South Asia dying at the same elevated rates? They don’t appear to be, looking at Worldometer. So presumably going to be significant socio economic factors at play within the UK. Which is probably unsurprising. I wonder what, if anything, will be done about it.

It does seem to be caused by diabetes

Around 40% of South Asian patients had either type 1 or type 2 diabetes compared with 25% of white groups.
Diabetes has a dual effect of increasing the risk of infection and damaging the body's organs, which may affect the ability to survive a coronavirus infection.

So if higher rates of South Asian people are dying the UK it must be due to lifestyle/living. If it isn't eleveated in South Asian countries then it's presumably the UK lifestyle. I wonder if there is higher rate amongst South Asian men and if that is the same as it is for the white population. If so is it actually just men that have a higher rate? Is this then related to men not being as careful e.g. not as good with hygiene/hand washing, not willing to wear masks as much as women? It may be more pronounced that it is men in this community as the women are less likely to work?

It only looks at this country. It would be impossible for the uk to gather data from other countries as there data/recoding of data/testing will be completely different.

What's the risk factor for a person from the subcontinent vs a north east asian (e.g. Han Chinese) person?
