AIBU?

To think the McCanns are being almost tortured by the media and the police?

See screengrab.

I said several days ago (on a thread here) that the letter was probably sent c/o Scotland Yard (and I wasn’t the only one to think so). If I can work that out why can’t the collective brains of German and U.K. detective teams PLUS dozens of European media outlets figure it out?

Why couldn’t Scotland Yard find a missing letter about a high profile, serious crime in their own building FGS?

How long has the delay been? Four or five days? This is cruel.

They need a new liaison officer now and the police need to pull themselves together.

To think the McCanns are being almost tortured by the media and the police?

Letters do go missing, that’s why I don’t trust them. Why couldn’t they email them? It’s standard now to email a letter and put the hard copy in the post.

You’d think they’d have sent it by courier. Or at least registered post to a named British officer.

There is probably a lot going on in the public domain. However I just feel so sorry for them, they have been to hell and back.

True. This just seems like one too many twists of the knife, and mainly the police to blame.

I actually feel quite angry for them. I can’t sleep and was googling to see what had happened, if anything, with the letter saga. I didn’t expect it to be a police cock up.

I’m sure there’s much more going on than me or you know, or need to know. Stop being upset on someone else’s behalf. I’m sure they do know more than they would care to share with you also

@ArriettyJones you are gossiping on a chat site about what could have happened to their daughter. No doubt they would hate you for what you are doing too

I don’t think so. Not on this specific, narrow issue. They’ve been specifically telling the press themselves all week that there is no letter and no reason to consider MM dead.

That’s a pretty clear position and an awful position to be left in. A British police force should have been actively liaising between them and German detectives, I would think.

I won’t stop being upset for them (NOT “on their behalf”). I think this a major police cock up. On the face of it, this is the very worse news possible and the delivery of it has been completely fumbled, along with the accompanying back-and-forth dispute about whether the letter even exists has been played out in the media. Awful. How could you not feel for them?

No I’m not.

I’m expressing dismay at the way this letter business has been handled.

Learn to read properly and/or stop stirring.

I'm entirely cynical, and there's a bit of me that thinks the Met have no interest in acknowledging MM is dead because it would likely mean an end to their annual Portuguese golfing trips.

I hope not @XDownwiththissort*, but it is a mystery what they’ve been investigating during all of these trips to PDL, isn’t it?

You are doing this by ignoring the parents wishes for privacy, because of course your upset means more than there‘s

But who care as you say let’s put them through the media and public forums again because we feel it’s best for them, despite what they ask, yes we are in the right!

@ArrettyJones

I've always wondered why they were expressly forbidden by the Home Office to investigate it as anything other than a child abduction. That runs contrary to common sense, especially when the case is years old and you're no closer to finding her. It reeks to high heaven. Not of conspiracy, just intransigence in terms of enabling a police force to investigate a crime to the fullest of their ability.

The police don't need to be told by a higher authority. If they were certain that the child had been abducted then I'm sure they were perfectly capable of funnelling their resources down that line of enquiry themselves.

I don't believe the folk who claim the police were 'warned off' because the parents were complicit, but I do believe there was something else shady afoot which the UK government didn't want exposed. I'm not going to go into it here. It's not the place.

@XDownwiththissortofthingX there should probably be a review at some point of every team that has investigated. I wouldn’t be surprised if various relevant parties ask for that.

Maybe because the police want to be 100% sure of what they are telling the parents and have a firm case before they tell them.
Would it be more torturous to give half thought through ideas or to finally be able to tell grieving parents what happened to their child and where she is?

Yes you’re right.

However, comments from German police officers to journalists this week have been to the effect that they have sent a sealed letter to the McCanns outline their line of enquiry. So it seems the German detectives made that choice.

Now it is being claimed that the (presumably sealed) letter from German detectives to the McCann was sent “c/o” Scotland Yard, but was “lost” for several days.

I suppose it’s possibly that SY chose to “mislay” it? But what’s the point with their German counterparts briefing the media all about the letter?

I hope they sort it all out soon, regardless of the exact details.

I imagine they sent it via Scotland Yard so they can have someone appropriate to support, comfort and explain the letter to the family and Scotland Yard needed to make the appropriate arrangements.

The media would be all up in German investigation teams arse and maybe they needed the breathing space to actually be able to investigate and wanted to be seen to be doing something.

Report
ArriettyJones · 19/06/2020 04:48

So you think SY would open a “c/o” letter from a foreign police force to a victim of crime, if it contained potentially distressing content @Mypathtriedtokillme ?

Maybe that could explain some of this, but that will still be poor handling.

I would have thought that with a case of this significance, public profile etc, the German police would have sent someone in person to impart that knowledge under normal circumstances.

We're in the midst of worldwide restrictions thanks to Covid, but Macron is exempt as a diplomat, police forces the world over are still investigating crimes, I'm sure somebody could have come in person. It seems far more humane and appropriate somehow than simply sending a letter and leaving it to people on the other end.
