DS4 will sometimes fall asleep on the sofa around 7-7.30pm, I will then take him to his bed half sleep and lo and behold, he’s fully awake. He will literally stay awake for hours in his bedroom, sometimes up til 10-11pm. He will ask for water, biscuits basically anything that can get him out of the bedroom. I miss those days when he was younger he’d fall asleep in his chair and I’d pick him up and take him to his bed, unfortunately he’s too big (and heavy!) for that now. It always amazes me how one minute he can go from being in deep sleep drooling to suddenly fully awake within seconds 😓.

Make sure he gets to bed earlier then, I'd say.

My kids sleep has gone to pot since lockdown, especially for my eldest. He just can't settle at night now and was still awake rustling around and making noise at 11pm last night.

I’d say make sure he falls asleep in his bed , I know if I fall asleep on the sofa then wake to go upstairs it can take me ages to get back off.

No they don’t but I can see why it happens. If I fall asleep on the sofa in the evening then I can’t sleep when I go to bed.
Best bet is to get him to bed earlier.

The thought of finding my 4 year old asleep on the sofa at 7.30pm brings me out in a cold sweat!! That’s like the latest of late naps and a nailed-on evening of hell!

Put him to bed before he falls asleep On sofa? Sorry if that sounds obvious lol. Does he not have a bedtime routine?

I can’t imagine it happening here! It’s dinner, bath, bed. No chance to fall asleep Grin

Just put him to bed at the right time. Bath, story, sleep.

Why on earth is he falling asleep on the sofa?

My 4yr old would go to bed at 6.30, she'd sleep for 12 hrs solid. If she went to bed later she'd still wake at 6.30am but be a complete nightmare

Don’t give him the opportunity to fall asleep on sofa. Bath, story and bed.

I’m just really confused- how is he falling asleep on sofa?

Surely dinner, bath, story light out, sleep.

If he's routinely falling asleep on the sofa at 7-7:30, make sure he's in bed by 6:30.

Don’t let him?

I don’t know why you’d sit there and let him go to sleep, just take him to bed!

Does he have a bedtime?

DS does, more often from falling asleep in the car, but occasionally on the sofa if I've left him with a film while I make tea. I find he's more likely to stay asleep if you leave him about 10 minutes before attempting the move. But if I mess it up and he wakes, that few minutes nap will keep him up for hours.

DD2 used to sometimes slip upstairs at about 5pm and go to sleep. She'd then not settle until 11pm or later.

Even 2 minutes of sleep used to do that to her.

It happens while I’m tidying up, after dinner they get to play for a bit or I’ll put a movie on for them while I’m cleaning. That’s how he falls asleep, sometimes I’ll catch him falling asleep and that’s when I try to put him to bed. He’ll refuse or sit in his bedroom crying, because he doesn’t want to be the only one going to bed. They all normally go to bed at 8pm, before schools closed it was 7pm. I’ve found the trick is not to let him sit on the sofa after 6pm 😂 That’s the only way I’ll get to read bedtime story and put him properly to bed. I’ve tried to put him to bed when I can see he’s tired, but he just won’t go knowing DS7 and DD6 is still up.

Put him to bed and tidy after? Or if their dad is around he does one you do the other. I wouldn't be encouraging TV straight before bed or trying to keep a 4 year old up later when they're falling asleep on the sofa

I've only got two, but my eldest DD8, also comes up at the same time and brushes her teeth and puts on her PJs so he thinks she's going to bed. He (DS4) is usually asleep by 7. I need some space to unwind in the evening so I just couldn't take the chance of letting him fall asleep on the sofa and then being up all night moaning because he's overtired; I'm a relaxed parent generally but theres no leeway on bedtimes!

I’d do bath at 6, Pj’s and teeth, then play in bed room for a bit, bed at 7 and he can look at a book whilst he drifts off. You could tidy up whilst he plays or after 7.30?
The PP is right currently he’s having the latest of late naps!
