AIBU?

To be irritated by receiving flowers

Firstly let be clear I did politely thank the sender, I'm not terrible. But I was sent flowers in the post yesterday and my only reaction was annoyance.

I don't own a vase so had to find a jug big enough for them. Loads of random wrapping that makes a big mess, loads of water in the wrapping that I didn't know about so flooded the table, spilt half the packet of the food liquid stuff which is very sticky, couldn't cut through the thick stems with first pair of scissors and had to use a knife.

Then they last a little while and don't even look that nice, and once they are past their best there's smelly, slimy water to deal with a drippy bunch of dead plant matter to chuck away.

I would happily never be sent or given flowers ever again. Just me or anyone else not like them?

I like them, although all the annoyances you mention are accurate. I think I just like them because no one ever sends me any SadGrin

YANBU. I hate flowers; they’re an expensive waste of money for something that causes a lot of fuss and dies after a few days.

I get people are trying to be thoughtful and I would always thank someone who sent me them but dear god they’re the worst gift in the world.

I also won’t buy anyone flowers because they’re such a waste of money. For the price I can buy a much better present they’ll prefer they can actually keep.

I’ll have them then. I love to receive flowers and very rarely do. You also sound quite clumsy, which might account for your annoyance. The sender sent them to you thinking you’d be delighted so I think you’re being ungrateful and unreasonable.

However, MNers seems to hate nice things like this that might slightly inconvenience them for two minutes, so I dare say I’ll be in the minority.

...even if you don't like them I find it astonishing that you care enough to moan to the Internet about it.

I love flowers and buy a bunch for my hall table every week, but I get why you would find them a faff if they're not your thing

Totally with you OP. my birthday was in lockdown and people sent me flowers, lovely gesture but such a pain to deal with. The people who know me best sent a hamper of food and one sent flowers that could be planted in the garden. I know who my real friends are!!

This is definitely true. Dealing with them is just another chore because I do find it all quite awkward.

I’m not generally a fan of gifts that involve me having to do work, unless I’ve asked for them. For me flowers fall into that category for all the reasons you’ve stated (unless they’re those ones that come in a box/bag where you don’t have to do any trimming/arranging and can just chuck them when they die with minimal hassle). I appreciate that for other people that simply isn’t the case, and I am grateful on the rare occasion that I’m given flowers.
A plant is marginally better, but that has ongoing maintenance and I’m not good at keeping stuff alive.

Ha! I'm at lunch between Teams meetings. I'm just passing the time.

I love flowers. Receiving them shows that the sender has thought about you and got you something that you might not necessarily buy for yourself.

I love them and have fresh flowers in the house at all times.
Yes it’s a faff but in all fairness to the sender your drama putting them into water was a pretty extreme case .

I love receiving flowers. Each to their own. You do sound quite ungrateful though. The things you mention are hardly a bother.

I don't like flowers inside either, I'll be gracious about it but I'd rather have a garden plant that I can put in and it will last for years.

I love flowers. I admit I technically prefer buying them myself than receiving them as often the bouquets are a bit dull and full of fillers but the thought is lovely and it does make me feel happy that someone thought about me.

I love them so much I have a subscription to receive an arrangement every two weeks. 😁 But, yes, if you’re not prepared for them then they can be a hassle to sort out.

I am ungrateful. I was sent something that was a bit annoying to deal with and will be annoying again in a few days when they die.

But I politely feigned gratitude to the sender as is the done thing.

YANBU.
I hate receiving flowers. They're just unnecessary work.

Now chocolate or gin? Yes please 😊

My home isn’t right without a vase of fresh flowers 🤷‍♀️

Where are you OP?
I'll come and relieve you of them.
I love cut flowers, but to truly appreciate them, you need to learn how to arrange them properly.
Dumped in a vase (or a jug), just will not do.
Get your creative juices flowing and do something artistic with them.

The bastards.

Thanks, OP.

Right, I'm off to make a list of people I hate so I can send them each a huge bunch of lilies.
