AIBU?

To tell teachers bashers to go and complain to their own fucking schools

Aibu to be fed up to the back teeth of ignorant comments like "do your job like everyone else" and " it's your vocation" aimed at all and any teachers who happen to be on a thread. If you have a problem with the teaching provided by your own school contact them. People commenting have no idea of the workload that the people they are trolling online might be struggling with. It's bullying plain and simple and wouldn't be allowed to be aimed at other groups.

Do you honestly believe that every single teacher in the UK is lazy? If not why not contact YOUR school about the issues you have with YOUR child's teacher instead of starting yet another general teacher bashing thread.

As a teacher on here I have to say I have never been more demotivated. I work hard for my kids at school while also homeschooling my own three like so many of us. How dare you make me feel like I am failing because you have an issues, unfounded in some cases I am sure, with your school?

They are your children take some responsibility, contact the school if you have concerns and accept that most teachers are fired for the children they each but we don't make many of the decisions. They are made at a much higher level.

For the people saying I am being unreasonable can you explain why we teachers should take your abuse?

YANBU.

I’m a teacher and have zero say in anything that is currently happening. I organise my year group’s home learning but I follow the structure I have been sent by my SLT. I try to make it as engaging and purposeful as I can whilst also recognising that not everything is possible for children and parents to achieve at home.

I’m also emailing every parent in the YG each week and responding to work that I’m sent.

All of that on top writing end of year reports and looking after my own DD(6).

YANBU at all. I’m not a teacher but I’m fed up of every day bringing half a dozen new teacher bashing threads.

I suspect the reason people whinge online rather than approach the teacher or school directly is because they would rather be a dick anonymously online than address a problem like a grown up. Because then the school would get a chance to explain the very real issues teachers and schools are facing, and the bashers don’t want to hear that.

I'm a teacher working at home, monitoring students and their work all day. There's nothing I'd like more than to be back in school teaching as normal BUT it has to be safe and in line with all the guidelines doesn't it? Thankfully all our school parents are very supportive and there have only been 1 or 2 not being reasonable about it. If you have a complaint then please take it your own school and not to any random teacher who happens to be on here.

Believe me I’ve tried. I’ve left messages on the answer phone which haven’t been replied to, and sent emails to the general enquiry email address (the only email address which is available to parents). I’m not sure what else I could do really.

For every ten threads bashing teachers we are allowed one standing up for ourselves. But don't worry there will be another teacher bashing thread along soon

Already have thanks. We’re now getting a little bit of feedback on the work after hearing nothing for weeks. It’s not a whole school issue as some teachers seem to have been doing loads according to other parents.

The member of the SLT was brilliant when she phoned me and had been really helpful.

YANBU. It is absolutely pathetic how some people have nothing better to do.

I do not think your unions help, they are creating a very much us and you divide.

I think you are being a little previous over this to be honest, do police officers feel the same when they are constantly attacked in the media? Lots of jobs people face criticism over their work standards and attitude.

So I would not take it to heart, and just get on with it.

PS I do not think teachers are lazy, and appreciate that they do work hard in tough conditions. However, viewing from the outside in, it does appear that they feel they are the only ones to face challenges, and others do not realise how hard it is.

YESSSSSS!

It makes no sense how many people are starting threads on mumsnet instead of SPEAKING TO THEIR SCHOOL. What on earth do they think a lot of of anonymous people on line can do to solve their problem?

I'm a teacher. I'm teaching my full timetable remotely (not always with video conferencing as I have my 3yo at home some of the time) and doing my damndest to stay on top of pupil's progress. It takes extra time because I have to keep comparing to the post-it notes I've written about which parents DO want to know if their kid isn't doing work, which ones DON'T, which ones are abroad (London school, so some international kids have gone elsewhere) so have permission to not log onto lessons providing they catch up within 48 hours or so....obviously it takes time to monitor work during a lesson as well as it's much harder than just glancing round the room and looking over kids' shoulders. I still have all my usual meetings, conducted online obviously, and have phone appointments with kids that I would have seen during free periods (meetings are frequently interrupted by DD.... not ideal, but can't be helped sometimes). We have continued lessons for Y11/13 this term, when normally they would have been on study leave, but parents wanted to try and keep them engaged so HoDs wrote new schemes of work and we have lessons for them, work to check. Tonnes of work went into sorting out grades for Y11/13. It's been an absolute tonne of work.

My DH is also a teacher (different school). He has to post a quiz for Y10 class once a week. He does go through their answers as he'll have these kids next year too, so he wants to stay on top of what they know. He's done one round of phone calls for his form, 5-10 mins each only.

Clearly, schools are NOT taking the same attitude, so what is the bloody point it taking your issue to the internet? TAKE IT UP WITH YOUR SCHOOL!!!!! They make the policy, the teachers follow it.

Unions are there to protect workers. Happier, more efficient and safer workers mean your children receive a better quality education and the country improves.

It’s this nonsense historic prevalent right-wing narrative that it’s Unions vs Ordinary people when it’s the absolute opposite. Unions are there to protect worker rights. They’re in most cases the only avenue for working class workers who’s voices are unheard to achieve anything tangible in their profession. It’s not a race to the bottom.

I think this is why the police, nurses and teachers always seem to be the most supportive and understanding of each other.

I contacted my local school to be told 'don't worry about it they will catch up next Sept'. I explained my concerns that friend's children have received a different amount/level of support and she said they were busy with KW's children so couldn't do as much! I pushed again and got the 'lot's of children aren't doing any work so don't worry'.... but I am worried can you offer more guidance.... well we are sending the same information out to all parents. Yes I know and it's not good enough!

This is a school that sends 1 - yes ONE email a week with suggestions of what work to do. This contains a few spellings, reminders to read for 20 minutes each day and websites they recommend. It's generic and would take 5 minutes to write! So yes I and many people are annoyed. We have a right to comment on here (a parenting site) about our individual experience of how our schools have failed our children. I know that not all teachers and not all schools have failed children but I am allowed to comment on MY experience. It would appear that MY experience is not unique and it appears that a number of children have been failed by their schools. It's not personal at all - it's frustrating.

I'm not a teacher, but ds2 is in his second year of teaching, and I am full of admiration for how teachers have coped with this.

Ds2 lives alone, and needed to stay where he was, because he's been called in to do shifts in the keyworker hubs in his area - otherwise he might have been able to come home, self isolate, and then work from here - so he has basically been living and working alone, with little or no real contact with anyone, apart from when he does essential shopping - and I have been, and am still extremely worried about the impact on his mental health.

He is working really hard to try to support his pupils, and I would hate to think he might be on the end of some of the teacher bashing I have seen on here.

YANBU that people should obviously talk to their school about any issues. But equally, half of the AIBU board is people asking/complaining about things that they could take up with the people themselves e.g. complaining about service in a shop, or something a GP receptionist said, someone posted the other day about something rude a pharmacist said. All those posters could be told "just take it up with them" but generally they aren't, or if they are they aren't also criticised for posting in the first place.
I don't think teachers are lazy, or not working hard enough, my mum is a teacher and I know how hard she works in normal times, let alone now. I also don't have a school age child so have no skin in the game from that side of things.

The vast majority of people don’t understand how schools work so although there are some parents on here who have the right to pissed off with the provision they’re getting they’re aiming their frustration in the wrong place, teacher have no control, in the same way most employees don’t, we all have to do what our managers tell us

I’m not a teacher so haven’t commented but the thread by NobleGiraffe is very good ref vulnerable children

My own input would be just how far reaching this problem is as my y10 child is in no way deprived or vulnerable but happens to go to a school where a lot of children are. The schools home learning provision is poor compared to what I hear about on here but the rational part of me thinks “well of course it is, if it wasn’t they would run the risk of leaving the vulnerable deprived kids behind”, but what means is they’re leaving their entire y10 behind compared with other y10s across the country

It’s such a mess

I am more than happy with how my DC's individual teachers have been working throughout this whole debacle.

My eyes have been opened to the ethos and attitude of our SLT however, and not in a good way.

We have complained to the school, board of governors, the local MP AND the Prime Minister.

So not exactly sitting back and posting on threads and nothing more.

We are going back in September so almost not worth worrying about now. It is a non issue. We will be down to zero deaths in a few weeks, and the infection rate will follow to zero in around six weeks.

All schools will be expected to open fully and on time in September, and they will. It is not even an optional as some would believe on here, but a legal requirement

It's fine for MNers to moan about anyone they want. Part of that is venting, which they wouldn't do if addressing the people concerned direct. Another part is seeking advice about how to approach things, what words to use, etc.

You can't shut down conversations and tell people they should talk to whoever they are complaining about instead. It's OK to do both.

There are some bloody awful teachers out there and there are some lovely teachers who make huge efforts to help their pupils. There are lots who fall between them. We're allowed to discuss all of them on here.

I'm with you if people are posting that teachers have had weeks off, doing nothing or that they already have masses of paid holiday so should work all summer but those usually get shot down pretty quickly on MN anyway.
