Barking puppy

I posted a week or so ago about our NDN and their new puppy.
Basically, 3 weeks ago they got a puppy. She is 10 weeks old this week. They go to work and leave her for at least 5 hours at a time (this appears to be getting longer).
The puppy barks virtually non stop and seems so distressed. She has started to howl as well as bark now.
One of them works shifts and one works part time but their hours seem to have been increased and they are leaving her longer.
This morning, so far she has barked virtually non stop since they left at 7am.
As a dog owner myself (the puppy sets off my own dog!) and an animal lover I find this is really stressful to hear.
The ndn think I am over reacting and basically said she will eventually settle down! Even when they are at home they will often ‘pop’ out for a few hours at a time leaving her to bark constantly.
I’ve contacted the RSPCA, they (as I predicted) were of little help, basically as long as the dog is feed, watered, sheltered and not abused (they are very loving to her when at home as I’ve witnessed them playing with her in the garden) in anyway there is little they can do. They said the barking can fall under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
There is very little that I can do is there? Other than go slightly crazy with the constant sound of her distress!?

Is it a beagle?

I would speak to them. They probably don't realise although personally a bit stupid if not.

I'm not a dog lover but I makes me cross that people get puppies/dogs and then leave them all day. Shouldn't get one unless you realise it is like having a baby for a period of time and even then it is limited how long you should leave them for

You can report to your council for excessive noise, they will come out and investigate, if the dog is barking as much as you say the council will note this and deal with accordingly. (Our old neighbour did this to us when our dog barked because he was stood at the bottom of our garden. Council came out and reported no issues/barking)

Is the house rented or owned?

I would keep a diary and report to the council

RSPCA are a joke, how can they think leaving a dog to be distressed all day doesn’t count as abuse? The owners should be ashamed!

I remember your last thread, the response you've had from the RSPCA is disgusting.
All I can say is keep a noise diary and report to the council (and keep reporting) it will take months.
If you can record the dog barking and then play it back to your neighbours so that they can understand what you are having to deal with.
Your neighbours are a disgrace and should not have a dog.

Your neighbours should be ashamed of themselves leaving such a young puppy on its own for so long. Why do people that have such busy lifestyles even get dogs Confused

My dogs would have been beside themselves being left for so long at such a young age. You have to build up to it and at 10 weeks, a pup should not be left at home alone at all! It's a baby Angry

BadLad she’s a chocolate Lab.
Normal I’ve spoken to them but they seem to think it’s all fine and she’ll settle down, eventually!
Flynn999 I didn’t want to go down that road but may have to!
Glitterb it’s owned. I personally think the RSPCA are no help, I’ve had dealings with them several times, I’ve started keeping a bark diary.
Cabinfever they have one of those monitors, they k ow how much she barks, that makes it worse imo!
Surreyhillsgirl I feel the same, I’m really seeing them in a different light now, thought they were lovely people at first!

Ah, OK. There was a thread recently about a similar problem, with a Beagle. Wondered if it was the same person.

I’ve even offered to pop in on the pup myself, they know I’m a dog walker. I would do it free of charge.

@Friedbluetomatoes I'm surprised they haven't jumped at that offer!

Glitterb maybe it’s because they are new neighbours and they don’t know me too well but I think it’s more that they think crating her and letting her bark is a way of training her and that she’ll eventually get used to it so they can then go out, pop her in the crate and everyone’s happy - except for the poor dog!

Oh poor pup ☹️

I would make a noise complaint via your local council/environmental health. I know the RSPCA side is frustrating, but if they took action against every excessively barking dog they would be overrun.

I have a new puppy, I can’t imagine the chaos/mess if I left him alone for fifteen minutes, nevermind five hours! I knew when I got him I wouldn’t be able to just go out for hours on end unless I had doggy care when he is old enough.

Mine is 14 weeks, the longest I have left him for is ten minutes as its something you have to build up really slowly.

Your NDNs are being completely unreasonable and personally I think quite cruel! Puppies need the toilet roughly every 2 hours so the poor thing will be trying to hold it in if left for so long!

I would definitely keep a diary and report to the council, more for the poor dog's sake than anything else.

what is wrong with them?! You can't leave a puppy alone that long. Maybe they need educating about how to train a puppy? Otherwise it will become a nuisance and then be up for rehoming...

I was going to say it must be toileting all over the house, but now you've said its in a crate thats even worse. Poor thing being made to sit in a crate with its own mess.

Report
Friedbluetomatoes · 17/06/2020 12:11

One of them is back now but that was still over 5 hours being left alone.

the bar is very high for noise nuisance but you might as well start. First step is a polite word. If they are too stupid or selfish to listen (fairly likely) follow up with a letter, there are templates on line.

if you fear for your safety (quite reasonable with people like this, they aren't exactly bothered about the dog, are they?) don't do either of these things, contact the council environmental protection team for help. You'll have to spend enormous amounts of time with a diary and they may still do nothing, but it is worth a try.

the RSPCA won't care and it isn't a police matter.

Report
mencken · 17/06/2020 12:25

ah sorry -too late, they know who you are. Go to the council, make it VERY clear that the neighbours are causing you statutory noise nuisance.
