AIBU?

Logging into everything gives me the massive rage. AIBU

I know how I am going to end my days. This is going to be the hill that I die on.

Logging in drives me insane. It literally makes me incandescent with rage. Angry Maybe it is just my household. My DH likes technology with everything. I reckon I spend a good proportion of my life "logging in".

Here is a real example. I want to listen to the radio. I have to:

Login to the computer with password
Get BBC Radio up
Asked for login and password
Pull up 1Password which also involves logging in.
Copy and paste login
Copy and paste password.
Go into drop down box and select speakers I want radio to come out with.

This process takes about 3 minutes. If I then talk away from the computer for more than a minute I then have to log in again.

Repeat process if I want to watch a movie on Netflix or iTunes and other stuff with accept cookies, blah blah blah.......

What happened to - go over to radio, turn knob on, perhaps move knob a bit to get to different frequency, music comes out?

Honestly, this is the hill I am going to die on.

The other new one is DH has put lights in the garden. "Where is the switch" to which he replies "there is no switch, you have to turn them on with your iPhone". Cue down load app, accept loads of privacy and cookie bollocks, login to phone to turn on. Honestly, just give me a f£king switch to flick. Why does tech have to be so cumbersome. I thought it was meant to make our lives easier. It just sends my blood pressure up.

I use LastPass and it logs you in automatically.

I agree.

I remember when I could watch TV just by turning it on.

These days if it's not working, or to use it, I need to deal with not just the TV.
-theres the hub service for the smart TV bit

  • the internet (so any errors can be the plug in socket bit I need to wiggle, or maybe the router, or maybe our services are down or there's a telephone line fault again)
  • the app for streaming (e.g. Netflix logon)

Honestly, sometimes if it doesn't work I just turn it off and wait until DH fixed it. I just can't be fucking bothered to do 10min of setup and login and wiggling and remembering password just to watch 10 min of TV.

It's one of the reasons I don't want a kindle. A book is fine ffs. No charging or downloading or shit to deal with - just reading on paper!!

I tend to have 200 tabs open in my browser. Then I don't have to log in again to most things.

You could just get a normal radio or listen on your phone without a password?

But yourself an actual radio op.

Once I got annoyed with wires. I then remembered how incredibly privileged I was to have wires. In a house. And decided if I ever got that mad with wires again id go straight back to Africa. I would cut down your technology massively and think about an epic adventure holiday you could take when we can adventure again. And so remember how great it is having a house with technology, toilets & water. But yes that sounds like too much technology to be fun.

I agree with what you're saying about how many outrageous permissions you have to give to use most apps. However, you shouldn't have to log into your technology every time you use it. E.g. a "high tech" way to listen to the radio would be with a home device. Normally with this you just say a key phrase, then the radio station you would like to listen to. Similarly with Netflix, if you have a smart TV it should already be logged on and all you have to do is pick your profile. I'm wondering whether your tech has been set up incorrectly or whether you are using it incorrectly. Maybe you should have someone other than your husband have a look. Do you know any teenagers?

Agree. I had to add email to Roblox account and wondered if anyone had actually died in this horrendous, non sensical process. Either in a murderous rage or simply losing the will to live.

Oh on the comments about the light..

DH once suggested one of the "smart" lights which you control using your phone for our lobby. Soooooo. If someone's at the doorbell in winter, I check who's there , prob in dark, and then have to run around the house looking for my phone... To turn the lights on to let them in?how's that helpful? Where did that solve my problems? When my phone might be on charge next to the bed upstairs, or in my handbags, or in the kitchen out back..?

Why the fucking fuck would I want another technology to annoy me? What is wrong with a switch at the exact point I need it?!

OMG! I'm so with you!
It's so irritating, especially BBC apps that offer to remember you but don't. Other apps remember me just fine on my personal use only devices...
I end up using other things that are less effort eg ITV player doesn't ask this all the time.
On top of that there are the work systems that ask me to change my password just as I've got the hang of one...

Just tell Alexa to play the radio!

I agree, OP, it’s infuriating. How long is it going to take for the tech industry to come up with something more sophisticated than R1d!cUL05 logins and having to remember dozens of increasingly obscure & K0mp1Ex p@sSw0rdS?

This. All this. All the time.

Lockdown has made it 100x worse as the kids have 59-bajillion new app login stuff and profiles on devices and oh dear god just bloody chuck it all in the bin. Tech Rage is a very real thing.

Can you buy an echo dot for £50? Then you can tell it to play any radio station, turn on the lights, turn up the heating etc. Without the need for logging in or wires or anything!

Yeah all those spying devices people love, it's a no from me.

I want technology to be my slave, not be a slave to it myself.
