I love a bassoon. I used to play bass clarinet and seethe with envy at the bassoonists next to me.

I don't like the piccolo. Too shrill.

Violin, piano and saxophone are my 3 favourite instruments.

The worst is the Highland bagpipes. I don't like panpipes either.

Love guitar or piano, as still sound lovely when played badly.

Hate violin. Have sat through too many screechy performances at school.

I think it depends entirely on whether something is played well or badly.

Some instruments sound fine from the beginning - harp, for example.

Some are a little painful to start but are quite quickly ok or even good - cello, flute, piano

Some are really quite painful initially but do get better - most wind instruments and the nicer brass instruments (french horn, tuba) would fall into this category.

Some have to be played VERY well to be bearable but are lovely when played brilliantly - violin, trumpet

Fave: cello (especially by the composer of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Tan Dun)

Worst: recorder. Specifically primary school recorder club.

And can I have another worst? Harpsichord. Hate.

I love the oboe. Really wanted to learn when I was at school but they didn’t any left so I started bassoon... never got very good. I play a bit of piano and wish I was better as it’s so beautiful when played well.

I can’t stand brass instruments of any kind

I really like an Oboe
I don’t really have a particular dislike - I hate anything played badly but can enjoy any well played instrument. . . Maybe my mother’s painfully tuneless singing?

Best saxophone. Sexy sound I think. Worst bagpipes especially at 4am in a bungalow as an aid to get guests to leave.

I have always loved the Cello...played if for about 5years at school then carried on playing in a youth orchestra for a few more years....a very long time ago though.
Not keen on bagpipes or recorder or a screechy trumpet!!

My 4 children have gone through all the piano gradings.

Excruciatingly painful for the first few years and then suddenly it comes together beautifully.

It has been a hard slog but I believe they have been gifted something enormous by their circumstances.

I fully accept I will be long gone before they might realise this. 🤔

BEST is the saxophone - it has such a gorgeous, sultry sound.

WORST - probably bagpipes, but there's not much worse than a beginner's violin

Favourite- guitar
Least favourite- bagpipes (more an instrument of torture than a musical instrument)
