Hello, I know it's not an aibu but couldnt fine another topic. My teeth hurt.. I went to dentist last august, massive fear of dental treatment, told I dont need filings however have gum disease!
My teeth have always been my best feature have a couple of fillings, brush twice daily. I seen a hygienist and she done an agonising scale and polish about jan I made a follow up appointment that has now been cancelled. I now use electric toothbrush, floss daily using the plastic things, hate the brushes..
My teeth feel manky, my gums have an itchy sensation, feel like my breath smells. I wear ppe at work so I notice. I feel my teeth are going to drop out.
Does anyone have any tips to get stop this getting worse or get rid of it. I'm 39.

Dip the floss stick thingies in Corsodyl before using them, I dip it in between each tooth, I found it made a massive difference.

I have to watch my gums all the time, I sympathise. I use Corsodyl toothpaste with an electric toothbrush, floss at least daily, and use Corsodyl Daily mouthwash too. When it flares up I swap that our for original Corsodyl mouthwash. If I get out of that routine my gums swell, get sore, my teeth start to feel loose and eventually my gums start to bleed. It's properly pants.
I too have missed a hygienist appointment and the next one will hurt, I know.

I'll try that tooth paste. Shall I brush more than twice a day or not? I use the original mouth wash every few days. It's awful, my gums never bleed they just feel itchy, on end and agitated.

Get a mouth guard for wearing at night. Grinding teeth is a huge contributor to gum disease as it creates pockets around your teeth in which bacteria can take hold and multiply.

I had bad gum disease an £000’s later its under control ..It will never go away, but is managed. You should try and get used to the brushes as they will clean the space between your teeth better than floss alone. I also used corsodyl (daily one not the weekly one) and listerine gum mouthwash. With both of these you have to remember not to rinse after using them. They are both strong and will make your eyes water the first time you use them , but you will build up tolerance yo them pretty quickly.

One option is to go to a peridontist like I did - but its like hygenist x100. Expensive , and to be frank pretty brutal even with a mouthful of injections...BUT it got control of a bad problem so that I can now ma age it. Pm me if you’d like details .

Oh and don’t smoke - its one of the worst things. Good luck

Use disclosing tablets to make sure you're getting rid of all the plaque.

I'm a hygienist. The word Listerine makes me sigh 😂 . If you can use interdental brushes, go for it. If you use corsodyl, make sure it's at least 30 mins apart from brushing your teeth.

I didn't know that about grinding - I tend to do this, have used mouthshields in the past.

I don’t think you should brush more often, you can over brush causing more problems! But I can also recommend Corsodyl and using the little brushes. Dipping the brushes into the Corsodyl is genius though!

@Jumpjumpjumper Listerine makes you sigh?

Why is that?

@Jumpjumpjumper Oooh why the wait? And why has my dentist or hygienist never said this to me?!

I have gum disease - about a year ago my gums were in awful shape, bleeding, pain, receding to the point where i had a slight gap/hole developing in one gum line where two teeth joined Shock

I had two sessions of deep cleans with my gums numbed followed by regular six monthly hygienist appointments. And then started to use the interdental brushes every day.

To be honest it was only thing i found that worked but it's important to use the right sizes - i have to use three different sizes... but the receding has stopped and for the first time in about ten years my gums no longer bleed. Corsodyle just made it worse to be honest!

Hydrogen peroxide is THE best. Swish 6% solution in your mouth every few days. It's heavy stuff so be careful but it kills all the germs DEAD. I also get teepees and dip them in it and then floss. Amazeballs. In no time your gums will be baby pink.

I have gum disease. I have a water jet and would recommend , its really good to use in between visit to the hygienist. You can buy one from argos or amazon. Also diet seems to play a part. I've been cutting sugar and increasing probiotic. I've made my own saurkraut and find it calm the itchiness if I experience some (you might think it's weard but it work for me) . Also I remember instant coffee agravating the feeling. I second hydrgene peroxide, you can mix it with baking soda and brush you teeth with it occasionally as quite abrasive.

You need to use corsodyl gel or mouthwash 30 min before or after brushing as it is deactivated by normal toothpaste. My "special" dentist who I have to see in addition to normal dentist said that Corsodyl toothpaste is no different from Colgate Total in efficacy BUT you don't have to wait to use your corsodyl gel/mouthwash after using it. They also only recommend Listerine Total (purple) and Fluorigard mouthwashes.
In terms of actual brushing: dental tape then teepee brushes then rinse then electric toothbrush and spit but don't rinse.

I have periodontal (permanent) gum disease op, only thing that keeps it at bay is a water jet flosser with a periodontal tip. I got one at a reasonable price on amazon.

My teeth are otherwise perfect bar the odd filling so when I got the diagnosis I was gutted. Other types of flossing wouldn't work due to overcrowding since sorted that with braces but still need to use the water floss everyday or within a few days my gums are full on bleeding again.Sad

Thank you I'm going to try one. Does it hurt if teeth are sensitive?

You shouldn't use mouthwash after brushing as it washes away all the protective fluoride you have just brushed on. If you use it then use it at a different point in the day

How bad is the gum disease? Did they do an X-ray to see if you have bone loss?

Report

I have auto-immune gum disease (fellow traveller to other auto-immune inconveniences). Because a different condition affects my hands and made it difficult to use Tepe and similar between my over-crowded teeth, I use a water flosser with a separate dose of Cordosyl with the specialist tips and it's been very helpful.

Does it hurt if teeth are sensitive?

Oh, yes - you make the mistake of using water that's too cool only the once… But as the gum disease eases, the pain typically slackens and the bleeding stops.

I havent had an xray. When I went to hygienist in january they said it wasnt too bad at that point. Thank you for all suggestions, I've ordered the water flosser. I'll try anything.
