TikTok - WTF?

UnaCorda · 13/06/2020 20:13

Feeling a bit bored earlier this afternoon (and inspired slightly by the excellent Sarah Cooper), I had a look at TikTok to see what all the fuss was about. I'm still none the wiser (all the videos were utter drivel, imo), but amongst all the clips of mainly teenagers and young adults was one uploaded by Amanda Holden.

In this video she walks down the stairs of her immaculate house, stops by the door to zip up her hoodie and smile at the camera, walks though and closes the front door, and turns round for a final glance at the camera.

Please can someone explain how you attain the level of narcissism required to think that anyone would be remotely interested in watching a 49-year-old woman walk down some stairs and zip up a cardigan? (And please also explain why this epitome of mundanity has several thousand likes...)

I feel like I'm in an episode of Black Mirror and life has been reduced to 30-second segments of asinine inanity. (Yes, I know I'm being a bit of a snob about it, but I genuinely don't get the hype.)

You are not being a snob it is pointless! I've never understood the hype either, glad I'm not alone.

It's all utter inanity. Your'e quite correct. Short videos of people doing really boring things.

Mind you I've never understood the hype about Amanda Holden either isn't she only famous for shagging Chris Tarrent in a field?

I just had to Google TikTok.

Meh!

Seems I'm not being unreasonable...

Probably a good thing I can't see the point of it; already waste far too much time on Mumsnet.

Is it actually harming you? It’s inane entertainment. Some people really need to unclench

TikTok is like all other social media. Lots of inane rubbish but if you look specifically for things you're interested in you'd probably find something that would interest you.

It's not compulsory though so if it's not for you it's not for you.

Is it actually harming you?

Of course not! I was just expecting something, erm, better. After all there are plenty of very silly but quite clever and/or amusing videos on other sites. The ones on TikTok all just seemed completely facile.

Like all media platforms, there’s a combination of great stuff and some awful drivel.

Some TikToks are really well made, funny and creative. Some are terrible.

I can’t get upset over something that’s encouraged young people to be creative and given them an outlet during a time where their whole world has gone to shit.

Your thread title should be Amanda Holden-WTF. Although I consider myself too old for TikTok 😂 I have some some good stuff on there and it's not celebrity content. I suspect a lot of views for celebrity content are bored gossip site writers who will bitch about her elsewhere.

Shagging Chris Tarrent in a field
🤣😆🤣

She meant Neil Morrisey (Bob the Builder)

Insideout99 · 13/06/2020 20:40

Hmm normally I'd agree but it's tiktok. That's very much the type of content that is typical on there.

probably less harmful than reading the daily mail, but equally pointless.

I meant tiktok, not shagging Neil Morrisey and/or Chris Tarrant in a field.

What would make a good TikTok is her kids reactions to her TikToks. I know she's a fan of wandering around in bikinis and stuff and while it helps pay the bills I bet the kids cringe

You need to watch the man who cleans swimming pools.

The thing with TikTok, is the more you watch (and 'like') the more it gets to know what you're into and tailors what it shows you. When you first go on it's just a random array of videos. Now all I get on mine are pranks, farts, and cats Grin You kind of have to put a bit in to get something out iyswim.

But this elitist snobbery of threads like this with I just don't get it, don't find it funny because I'm too sophisticated is so dull. It's like saying you don't enjoy youtube because the one video you happened to watch had nothing to do with your humour/hobbies/interests. You just picked the wrong video.

The point at which someone farted into a ziplock bag was when I gave up.

You just picked the wrong video.

Fair enough.

Meh can’t get upset about it. Downloaded it a few weeks back, slightly hooked, its algorithm is scarily accurate sometimes (down to a weird baby toenail) and shows you videos from people you have things in common with, or have watched similar content before. The kids and I love the cat videos. Now I have had it a few weeks I see less of the teen crap dance ones.
But re Amanda Holden, definitely a narcissist. Keep waiting for her face to look less plastic as her fillers dissolve over lockdown 🤭

I thought the ones where people did the 'nakey challenge' were quite funny but they are all set up and I am not of the right age I don't think.
