Mass Gatherings

After months of lockdown people fined, a hairdresser jailed for open salon.
Massive outcry about DC breaking rules , over 60,000 people dying blaming cheltenham races and football for spikes in CV, only 6 people allowed to meet outside and support bubble with 2 households only.
We are in the middle of a pandemic massive criticism of the government .
Treading carefully but why haven't they stopped protest thousands of people gathering it's just a disaster in the fight against CV .These are organised events .
We are at the mercy of the virus hopefully it's short term and that should take priorty BLM will take years.
From a public health point of view it's proven that BAME is a high risk group so all the BAME people taking part are very high risk .
Apologies in advance if I've worded it wrong and don't mean to offend anyone and I support the cause

Of course there shouldn't be mass gatherings at the moment. But what do you expect them to do about it? Thousands of protestors will be in London again today. The police can't just turn them around and send them home as they'll just gather somewhere else anyway. All they can do is hope the protests stay peaceful. There's no way that will happen today though. It's going to be nasty and I feel for any police having to work there right now. It must be terrifying

If a hairdresser was jailed for opening a shop .Surely the organiser who have organise and promoted it should be held to account .

YABU to start yet another thread on this topic, you could've contributed to one of the other god knows how many threads on this matter.

Where have the 60,000 deaths come from?my understanding is that it's currently at 41,000 in the UK.

Watch The 13th on Netflix- it might open your eyes to the reality of what the BLM are fighting against.

I went to a protest in Wolverhampton last Sunday, it was peaceful, outdoors and socially distanced.

Realistically, if the protest is outdoors and masks are being worn then transmission rates won’t be high.

Probably more chance of catching Corona in Ikea.

YANBU. There shouldn’t be any mass gatherings at the moment.

But they’re not being stopped because the government and polic are unfortunately having to tiptoe around them lest they be called racist for wanting to put a stop to a mass gathering of mindless violence that will spread the virus and cause loss of life.

There are no ‘mass gatherings of mindless violence’ and you need to educate yourself @understandmenow

In every large group of peaceful, genuine protesters there will be the few there whose main focus is inciting violence.

Schools are open, public transport has continued throughout, many shops opening next week. Protests are all outdoors and most wear masks so I really don’t think it’s any more of a risk than any of the other forms of social gathering in terms of risk of transmission. The point is they have a real cause.

Please watch The 13th, it’s never too late to learn.

The BLM Hyde Park protest today has been cancelled by the organisers. If hundreds or thousands of people still turn up, what do you expect the Police to be able to do?

Wasn’t the hairdresser who was jailed in America?

CiderJolly I’m going to assume you were referring to me.

Of course not every single protestor is causing mindless vandalism, but it’s not a peaceful protest by any stretch of the imagination, and I’m not just talking about the violence.

They are silently spreading the virus that will lead to many people becoming sick and they will be the cause of many deaths. That’s not peaceful. It’s selfish.

For thousands of people the reality is Covid is not the worst thing happening in their lives, it’s not the thing they’re most scared of - if you try to imagine that being your starting point and work from there you may begin to understand the protesters.
I don’t mean for that too sound patronising

CiderJolly Of course not. Firstly, it’s about American race issues and we’re in the UK. Yes, we have our own racial issues, but they’re completely different to the US. They can’t be compared. We have different histories and cultures.

And secondly, I have no interest.

@heartsonacake You really need to educate yourself on the number of BAME deaths in custody in the UK..

This is an excellent explanation, @TheFuckingDogs.
@heartsonacake our issues aren’t as different as you would like to think. You have no interest in our society being deliberately unequal? That doesn’t reflect very well on you.

It’s so far from ‘mindless’, it’s a human rights protest.

I don’t condone violence but sometimes you need to cause disruption in order to be heard. I will never fully understand because I’m white but I want to, I care. People don’t protest in the millions, worldwide, for the fun of it. Like I said, please, educate yourself. Until Black Lives Matter as much as white lives the protests will go on. They need to. Slavery, despite what American legislation might have you believe, never really went away, it just took on different form. Black people don’t enjoy the freedom and lack of fear that white people do and we take this for granted. We are more scared of Covid 19 because we don’t live with the daily fear of being murdered just for the colour of our skin.

The best you can do if you care about other people at all is to educate yourself.

It’s an ongoing process here- I need to learn more about racism here in the UK. I hope to God it’s not the same picture as that in America right now.

@heartsonacake why do you have no interest?
Do you have children? What kind of world do you want them to be living in?
I teach mine that racism is evil and leads to suffering, that all people are equal. I teach them about propaganda and how we shouldn’t believe everything portrayed to us by the media- the importance of education.

What do you teach yours? Because you know this issue affects and reflects upon all of us right?

What kind of society do you want them to grow up in?

And when we look back on these times in years come and your grandkids (bit of an assumption there) ask what you did? Will you feel content to say you didn’t actually give a shit?

Why has the Hyde Park protest been cancelled ? Was it because the police have said everyone has to go home at 5pm or because the footie old firms have threatened to turn out?
