AIBU?

To ask about your internal ultrasound

Me and my partner have been trying for a baby for some time with no success. I'm due to go for an internal ultrasound next week to see if there are any obvious problems and just wanted to know what it's like. The idea creeps me out a bit!
Yanbu- it's ok
Yabu - it's awful

Can't vote but I had ivf which entailed lots of internal ultrasounds. Honestly they were fine. Less uncomfortable than a smear. Hope it goes well

I found it much more comfortable than a smear test, really not that bad. It's easier the more relaxed you are also. Flowers

Voting isn’t enabled, but it’s totally fine. Not sore, or even uncomfortable really.

I’ve had loads. It’s fine. Easier than a smear.

I found it totally fine. I’ve had a few (pregnancies, miscarriages etc).
They’ve always been very professional and discreet and it’s over quickly. It’s a bit like having a smear but you don’t have someone down ‘that’ end of the bed peering in.

It’s a bit weird when they put the condom on the probe thing. Grin

It wasn't pleasant but not awful either. Mine was for a host of gynae issues which included cervical erosion though so the cervix bumping was the worst part. No worse than a smear, and actually less invasive I felt!

Yanbu. I’ve had a few due to losses. It’s a bit weird our trust uses the wind with gel on inside a condom with lube on. No worse than any other internal exam just sounds worse.

It’s nicknamed dildo cam between The people I talk to make it slightly less intimidating And as humorous as such as thing can be.

I've had quite a few done and yes, it's a little odd BUT do remember that the sonographer does this sort of thing all day, every day. Also, it's for the greater good. I promise you this - it won't be anything like as bad as you imagine it will be. Hoping everything turns out well for you Flowers

Mine was fine too, I was talked through the process and it didn’t hurt. Smears are much worse.

I agree with previous posters. They are honestly not that bad, I find smears much more uncomfortable.

I've had plenty due to fertility treatment, it's not uncomfortable, just a little weird.

I’ve had a few. It’s fine, doesn’t hurt at all. You can feel it, obviously, but more in a ‘there’s something up my flue’ sorta way rather than it being uncomfortable. They will cover your modesty with a gown/paper sheet.

I just feel a bit awkward lying there while they lube up a condom on ET’s finger ready for the probing.

Can vote but both of my children were born following IVF, I also had IUI treatment so plenty of experience in this area. In my experience although not the nicest experience it was done with care dignity. If you have regular cervical smear tests done I would say they are worse. Good luck!

I had one about 8 years ago. It is completely fine, far less uncomfortable than a smear.

Totally fine and doesn't hurt in the slightest.
Those I have had done, most recent being last year. The probe is covered in a condom and inserted. A little pressure/moving applied to enable them to see everywhere that they need to.
It doesn't take long.
Agree with others that it's a much more pleasant experience than a smear.

It's fine. I found it not dissimilar to a smear test but it was slightly less uncomfortable.

Though I will say, the nurses who did it told me that there was nothing amiss. Then my GP told me I actually have a heart shaped uterus, judging from the scan.

I dont know if the nurses weren't allowed to tell me or if they just didn't notice, but I always found it a bit odd!

It’s absolutely fine. Wear a skirt/dress/long top that covers your modesty a little as it might make you feel a bit more comfortable.
You basically take bottom half off, jump on the bed, they’ll probably ask you to put your feet together with your knees out. It will feel cold as they insert but once it’s in it’s absolutely fine.

It's fine. I hate smear tests but wouldn't blink at having another ultra sound scan.

The shape of it is ... correct ... and there's no sensation of being stretched//poked/scraped like there is with a smear.

My tip for helping to relax your vaginal muscles is to ask for a moment, breathe and and try to first relax your jaw muscle. Let your shoulders drop and let your jaw go slack. Feel your teeth part. Then allow your vaginal muscles to relax. It should be easier to achieve it this this way.

Sounds mad, but it works. Don't know why.

It's absolutely fine, I had one once which was sprung upon me with no notice but it was fine, seriously.

It's no big deal. Much easier than a smear or other pelvic exam.

They’re ok really. You may find it weird But the healthcare professional won’t. I’ve had a few and haven’t found it painful

It was fine, I mean, I've had more fun on a tuesday afternoon but there was barely any discomfort at all (like a previous poster, I have cervical erosion so there was a brief moment of 'ouch' when my cervix was bumped.

I'd prefer it to a smear any day.

My one tip would be to take some tissues with you and maybe pop a liner or towel in your knickers afterwards, they use quite a lot of KY jelly type lubricant to make it more comfortable so it can be a bit messy afterwards. It's not a big deal though.

Much easier than a smear but I did find having to go with a full bladder rather a challenge! (If that's what they ask you to do) that was the most uncomfortable bit for me...
