AIBU?

To be thinking about JKR's mental health right now?

I'm not going to patronize her enough to say I'm worried, but honestly! This is too muchm

Her initial tweet showed her how these issues were already concerning her (and she expanded on these fears in her essay). Then the response was disgusting and I'm sure can't have felt great (no matter how much she expected it). No one likes to read threats of abuse, especially when you have actually gone through what she has.

Then Dan Radcliffe throws her under a bus, a few more supposed follow suit. She spends time writing this extremely thought out (and incredibly reasonable, whatever your view) essay. She has to think about and bring up a very painful past. Then she STILL gets abuse for this, including rape comments. More Harry Potter stars including supposed feminist Watson denounce her. AND DON'T EVEN MENTION THE ESSAY!

Then The Sun shares the story from her abusive ex and throws his comments all over the front page?! Disgusting!

I know she's a strong woman and I hope as hell she's got people supporting her right now. Even for someone who didn't have a history of depression, this would be horrific.

Whatever happened to 'Be Kind?'

I dont think this is going anywhere for a good while :(

YANBU. Hope she's off Twitter and just hearing the millions of voices who not only agree with her and support her but are deeply, deeply grateful for her bravery.

I hope she is ok. Sending her a big hug and telling her to ignore all the f@ckers

I hope she's OK too.
To jk, just remember there's millions of women out there, sat on the sofa or cooking the tea who totally agree with you. Flowers

“Be kind” doesn’t apply to uppity women unfortunately. We are expected to keep our mouths shut (and purses open, according to Jameela Jamil).

I honestly think she’s been, if not planning then at least, preparing for taking this stand for some time. She’s been watching and observing, she’s a smart woman - she’s seen the backlash that other women have suffered and for whatever reason decided know was the right time. It may have been the proposed changes in Scotland that pushed her over the edge, or she may we’ll have always intended to do something now.

I am sure she has a great team around her and she is a strong woman, but messages of support (which you can send by email or by post to her office) are, I’m sure, always welcome.

I hope she's OK. I would think she's got someone monitoring Twitter without her having to look at it at all. I think she was incredibly brave both in the way she spoke up about the trans issue and also about domestic violence.

I’ve been thinking about her too. I hope she hit send and then switched off everything so she has no idea what’s going on.

I also hope she’s re writing thr next instalment of “fantastic beasts” so tragically Newt dies in between films and Eddie Redmayne never makes another penny out of her.

Whatever happened to 'Be Kind?'

This statement should have come with a disclaimer that this only applies if you have the "right" opinion.

This could be what breaks the dam.

I have expressed my views on the subject after sitting quietly too scared to say anything. Today I have interacted with many others who are just like me.

Brave and stunning! Thank you JKR for giving me the courage to stand and be counted.

YANBU. I don't agree with her viewpoint, but some of the abuse she received was shocking and the Sun front page was a disgrace.

I don't agree with her at all but I am worried about her and do not agree in anyway for the abuse she received and as for the report in the Sun and their headline , well I have no words....disgusting doesn't cover it...
I am diametrically opposed to her view and but I wish her well and do hope she's ok

unfortunately in the UK domestic abuse and other abuses of a partner are not taken seriously. Her ex has admitted hitting her but he won't even get spoken to by the police as it's historical.
Her ex like mine actually just laughs and says you deserve it and it's ok as it's a one off. People just don't understand how that makes you feel inside.

GCTIC, I agree - I’ve been quietly expressing my views in closed private groups of friends but after she put her statement out I “came out” on Facebook, and have had nothing but agreement from those who chose to comment.

I think this will be the event that brings it To the wider public - even the way that places like the BBC have tried to cover the story will intrigue people, making reference to “her comments on transgender people”, which is only going to make those who are unaware think “what comments? I must read those.”

Sunlight is the best disinfectant after all.

YANBU OP
That blog she posted in her website was well written and balanced and she was very brave to post it. Unfortunately, the people that really need to read it have the attention span of a goldfish and can only handle Twitter’s 280 characters of information at a time.
Although I would have thought that Watson could have fucking well read it! She seems to actually have the intelligence to read whole books so she could have given JKRs blog a squizz...

Happyspud, nice bit of victim blaming there. Why not just come out and say she was asking for it?

Report
tilder · 12/06/2020 20:50

And her insistence on defending herself shows that she really doesn’t know what’s good for her.

Yes, wimmin. Know your place. Shut up when told. Do as you're told. Don't think for yourself. Ffs.

If she gave up she would never be forgiven anwyay. Plus it's obviously not what she believes.

She will continue to be threatened with rape by (unfortunately) trans women. Despite her being a sexual assault survivor and one of the issues being about allowing trans women in female spaces. 😳 Hmm.
