AIBU?

... to wonder if these pictures are offensive?

There were shared by an artist on a Facebook group. I think they seem offensive in some sense - but then I have also been told I am too sensitive and overthink everything. I also wonder if the original intention of the author matters, or the geographical origin of the pictures in relation to what is the style of humour captured.

I am trying to be more aware of when to "get over myself" so I would be interested to see what others think.

YABU - they are not offensive at all
YANBU - I can see what you mean

I think they’re old fashioned and I definitely wouldn’t be buying one. But I can’t really see who they would be offensive to.

Who do you think they are offending?

What?

Nope. Can’t see on any level how these are offensive.

I would say: they are ugly, they are unappealing, they're not decorative and they are crap, but are they offensive?

No.

Definitely not my style or taste but I don’t see anything that could be labeled as “offensive” there.

They're not nice pictures- but that's the style I don't like. What's the offensive bit?

Can't work out what I'm supposed to be looking at. Can't see anything weird there except perhaps the first photo, which I'm trying to figure out what s/he (?) is doing?

I think the main character’s breasts are over exaggerated - it’s bit over sexualised/gross

Other than that I have no idea what the comic is supposed to represent

What on earth are your overthinks about them, OP?

As PP said, is it gross, but to be offensive it has to be hurtful and/or upsetting to someone.

Are these portraits of you? If they are, then yes, they are offensive!!!

They are awful pictures but not offensive

They're horrible. Almost spooky. I know what you mean OP. There's something in them that's very reductive and stereotypical.

For me it's the way the woman's body has been portrayed (objectified?) in comparison to the other figures in these drawings. It broadly links to an area of academic study in my past - female representation in media etc, so that's why it is good for me to check where my thinking lies. As I said, I have been accused of overthinking things!

But I am also aware of the tradition of seaside postcard humour - which this reminds me of.

Yes, I see offensive was too strong a word. Thank you.

Can't get excited about them

and I wouldn't call it a "style of humour" at all - more a social history illustration

(unless there are captions which haven't been included)

I have other feelings but am not 'offended'.

Report

Why are they offending you? Anything can be 'offensive' as that's a personal inference.

Are the sketches supposed to be separate or are all 4 combined telling a story?

Thank you louder than - those are better words for what I am trying to articulate. It's an area I find interesting - how women are represented in the media and in public spaces - even though I am long past having to write essays about it!

Get over yourself. Grin

I don't see them as offensive at all. They are old-fashioned and, thinking about it, I suppose they depict 1950s women from working class backgrounds. Nowt to be offended by. Probably a true depiction of those times.
