AIBU?

To be grossed out by poo on supermarket bought chicken eggs?

Hulahoop32 · 09/06/2020 13:29

My oh thinks I’m mad 🤣 Decided to do some baking with my 4yo today and couldn’t find a single egg without poo on it! I read you shouldn’t wash them so just used the cleanest one I could find but now I’m reading all about how dangerous chicken poo is (I’ve been on furlough a long time and my brain isn’t operating rationally anymore. )

What does everyone else do?

In the grip of a bad bout of ocd I would have been consumed by something like this.....
Im not worried about that now its manifested into something else so right now I dont care and just use the egg.

Well, I don't put the shell (or the poo) into whatever I'm cooking. That seems to work pretty well.

The eggs came from chicken bums lol
Next you'll be complaining there was a feather in the box

Why shouldn’t you wash them?

Just crack them into the bowl then immediately wash your hands

I have hens in the garden so frequently have muck on the shells, never seen supermarket ones with muck on though.

You shouldn't wash then store them as washing removes the protective bloom - but if you wanted to wash them then use immediately (so that you don't crack muck into whatever you are making) then that's perfectly okay.

Why wouldn't you wash it. Bird shit is toxic

So what did you do with the rejected eggs? Is this the first time you have bought eggs?
It's quite sad really that a grown adult is so far removed from the process of producing food that they have never seen dirty eggs. Did you teach your 4 year old that the eggs were bad?

Tabu just wipe them with some kitchen roll and don't put the shell in your food!

Actually you shouldn't wash eggs but I can't quite work out why you can't use one that has a bit of poo on it.

Report
Allyo19 · 09/06/2020 13:37

You shouldn't wash them when you buy them because you stop the shells being non-porous, but i don't think there's any problem washing just before using them if you want to

You can wash them before use, just not as soon as you get them and/or intend to keep them a few days. Something about bacteria on the outside helping them stay fresh, from memory

Fun fact for you op... happy cooking!

The egg, poop and urine (which for a chicken isn't a liquid) exits out of the same hole (aka, the vent, as you can see above). BUT, when an egg comes out, the chicken's Cloaca is turned inside out so that the egg cannot come in contact with the intestines (fecal matter nastiness).

I would probably wash them just before use if the poo was somewhere where it night get cracked into what I was making, but they're eggs, they come from hens. That's the deal...

Same as how white meat sometimes has blood in it: we are choosing to eat animal products, so they may show traces of their source!!

Yes wash before you crack it is what.i meant.s

Your brian isn't operating because your are on furlough?

Do you think people who dont work, don't have fully functioning brains.

Its an egg. It comes from an animal.

You can wash eggs.

Wtf?

Thank you @Givingup123456 - Until today I had not seen images of an egg exiting a hens body, and I had no idea it was the same orifice.

Now I am off down a chicken anatomy rabbit hole!

Presumably you weren't planning to include the shitty shells in your baking? In which case this is a non-problem and you should probably grow up and set a better example to the DC you were baking with.

Apologies for being brusque but I can't bear this sort of precious behaviour!

OP bless you, you made me laugh out loud! Yes poo can be on something that comes out of a bottom. Wash your eggs on cool water.

Report
amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 09/06/2020 13:46

@Hillocrew do they? I don't think they do actually!

But OP you could always try vegan baking if the poo freaks you out.

DefinitelyCommisery · 09/06/2020 13:47

The poo on the egg comes from the egg landing on contaminated bedding, properly free range eggs will Do most of their business outside. The more expensive the egg, the better the conditions will be for the chicken and consequently the quality of the egg. Not all free range conditions are equal.

As other posters said, it’s fine to wash eggs just before using if poo is visible as the protective bloom won’t degrade enough in that time to spoil the egg.

Sorry - do eggs come from chickens' bottoms? I thought chickens had something similar to a vagina?

Genuine question from city-dweller btw.
