Neighbours Hot Tub

Hi all
Just had our new build garden landscaped and its finally looking great after a lot of hard work by me.
The neighbours across from us have just installed a hot tub which they have been using every day/night in the good weather. However, as the fence is wooden (it is 6ft high) you can see through the slats into their garden. Every time I'm in my garden when they are using it they give us evil looks through the fence and generally make us feel like we shouldn't be in our garden when they are in the hot tub. If I'm honest I also feel uncomfortable being out there when I know they are in it.
Surely the onus is on the person who installed the hot tub to provide some sort of privacy screening if they are that bothered about being seen? I mean like willow/bamboo screening on their side of the fence.
I'm gutted that I can't go out and enjoy my garden without feeling like some kind of perv.
It's currently being used until the late hours and keeping my children awake with the noise they are making. Honestly, why are some neighbours so oblivious to their behaviour?
Does anyone have a hot tub? How have you provided privacy and does it bother you if your neighbours are out in their garden when you are using it?
On the plus side it does not look like a permanent structure so hopefully will be gone once the spell of good weather is over!

Oh do you mean one of those awful inflatable ones? I'd be pissed as well, especially at the evils.

I'd probably buy some screening your side just to hide their evils from your garden, although I know it's annoying. That or empty a jar of pickled onions into it whilst they're asleep 😬

ETA we have one, but no neighbours. I'd think it's the same antisocially to any music/ noise after 11pm if it is disturbing the peace?

If I were you I'd make a point of using my garden MORE than usual. They have absolutely NO RIGHT to glare at you for using YOUR garden.

CFs!

Give them a breezy "Good evening!" and go about your business. Invite friends over. Use your garden to the max!

I’d let them glare! Nobody would stop me using my garden.

How big are the gaps?

Put up your own screening. It’s the only solution to privacy and sanity. Yes it’s irritating but the cold nights will be here before jack spratt falls over his cat. Smile in your garden, with new screening and let it goooooo!

Don't be made to feel you can't use your own garden. If you're not comfortable being outside because they are looking at you, then put up a screen.

I'm aghast at all of the posters suggesting that the OP invest in screening.

She has just spent a considerable amount of money on her garden. Why should she be out of pocket further to protect the modesty of her neighbours!

If the neighbours want screening - THEY should go the expense/inconvenience of buying it and putting it up!

Bloody weird to glare at you, that would really get my back up. I would be patching up the gaps in the fence pronto. Probably involving being very vocal about nailing slats of wood onto the fence while they were sat in said hot tub Grin

They need to screen off their own sex pond.

The neighbours haven't expressed a desire for screening. The OP has.

We’ve got a hot tub this summer, yes, one of the awful inflatable ones frillyflamingo. It’s great.

It’s positioned to be maximally screened from the view of the neighbours though it concerns dp far more than me. But yes, the onus for ensuring their privacy is on the household who install the hot tub rather than the neighbours. Enjoy your garden and ignore their glares.

I'd ask them outright: "Doesn't it bother you that we can see you through the fence when you're in your hot tub?"

If they say yes, then tell them to get a solid fence; if they say no, then ask why they're always giving you evils.

I'm not saying you should pay for more screening, but what sort of six foot wooden fence has gaps big enough to see scowling neighbours through?

Report
Freddiefox · 08/06/2020 22:53

Just smile, wave and ignore

Are they naked when using it? Stuff them. Is also use the garden more and don't feel uncomfortable. If they don't like it they should out a screen up.

AvoidingRealHumans · 08/06/2020 22:59

Another one who can't picture the gaps in the fence.
You may be over thinking them glaring at you because you know they are all but naked the other side of the fence and it feels awkward.

They should definitely provide the screening but if it makes you more comfortable with screening up you should probably just get some.

No way would I stay out of my own garden just because they don't like it. I would give a cheery wave and a big loud 'Yoohoo' then settle down with my drink and my music blaring. Cheeky gits what they are.

How shit is a fence that you can see through! Is it a lattice?

Its just a standard 6ft wooden fence with vertical slats about 5 inches wide, then a gap of 2 inches (I think) then another slat etc etc.
I really didn't want to spend any more having just spent upwards of 6K having the garden landscaped and planted up.
It's just awkward knowing they are there, when I'm sitting on the patio or doing some planting right next to the fence and they are glaring as if I'm trying to eavesdrop on them.

Very odd. Presumably they are wearing swimwear? We have a proper one landscaped into our garden. I read in it most days so can’t see how it would bother neighbours - if they wants to stare they can but likely get bored to death though our neighbours too busy gardening to pay us any attention

Just what is the attraction of hot tubs?

Report
copperoliver · 08/06/2020 23:13

Ignore them if they are that bothered let them do something about it. X

Some obnoxious 90's hits and giving the kids some fun garden activities preferably with water would at least give them a reason to be rude.
Joking aside do not let them ruin your enjoyment of the garden.
