To be annoyed by this comment (current protest related)

As with everyone, I’m appalled by George Floyd’s death and the circumstances around it.
I’ve just seen a post elsewhere showing a packed out protest in Manchester (no social distancing there) which although I agree with the sentiment, think it flies in the face of our lockdown and the hard work our NHS workers have been doing over the last few weeks.
Under the video I’ve seen the following comment from an American health care worker which has just made my blood boil. I know I shouldn’t let it bother me but I’m so mad. Anyone feel the same? Here goes the post:
“ Thank you. It’s nice to know the world heard us shouting from Minneapolis MN. 💕💕💕 It has needed to happen for some time and I’m glad it’s finally being heard.

And yesssss, we are still in a pandemic, I am very, very aware. I’m a nurse and keenly aware of that. But they swear up and down that hand washing and masks are suppose to be good enough, so... protest on. The US, Brasil and the UK have the worst COVID numbers anyways, so what does it matter? We cannot keep treating black lives as inferior. Perhaps your cops are not as out of control as ours here are in Minneapolis, but it’s horrifying. If you’d like examples, I could link you videos to turn your stomach, but it’s my BILs corner of the internet, so I won’t.

Thank you UK for being bothered, I know often it takes a lot for you to be bothered and I’m happy to see you putting down the tea and standing up”.

Well, when there's an inevitable further increase in covid within the bame community as a result of this, will then be able to take responsibility for not valuing the lives of the bame community.

I think that's an amazing comment and it cheers me to know that showing solidarity with those in the US is appreciated.

I didn't go on the protest yesterday because of my concerns about social distancing. But I'm white and privileged. I have the luxury of staying at home and not being active in that way. Hopefully, the small things I'm doing will have an impact but it won't be comparable to the protests.

A second wave was inevitable before yesterday but we know who the racists will blame for it.

Not sure what you’re mad about, but I’ll tell you what maddens me. Whilst i am as appalled as anyone about what’s happened to George Floyd and the attendant injustices, I am also appalled that these protests are being allowed and in a lot of cases lauded, in the midst of a global pandemic. Medics and other key workers have worked unselfishly and tirelessly to help those affected, lockdowns have been imposed all over the world and thousands upon thousands of people have died.

And what do we have now ? An eruption of violent protest across the world, and planned demonstrations allowed to take place. It makes a nonsense of what we have all been through for the last few months, it hugely disrespects the work of all those who have put their lives on the line to get us through it, and also those who have died and the grief caused to thousands of families. Black lives DO matter. But not at the expense of everyone else’s. So am I being unreasonable to think that it is massively self indulgent and selfish to stage these protests at a time when we’re all at such risk.

The mass gatherings will undoubtedly cause an increase in the spread, there will be spikes and the R rate will increase. Black people who attend these protests will undoubtedly contract the disease, so we will then undoubtedly hear more about how they are disproportionately affected. I know I am about to bring a slew of racist accusations down on my head for posting this, but I don’t consider any of this racist. For the record, I believe that if the situation in Minneapolis had been reversed and four black police officers had killed a white man in this manner, they would have been in custody and charged with murder by the end of the day. The injustice is palpable and real. All I’m saying is that this is not the time.

Personally I think it does matter especially for those NHS and key workers who have had such a massive task recently under so much pressure. I think it just flies in the face of them and their sacrifice.
I’m in no way saying there shouldn’t be an outcry and action out of such an injustice, it makes me feel awful people out there are dealing with these things on a daily basis. That being said, we all also have a responsibility to protect people from covid which is as easy as not attending mass gatherings at the moment. There are cleverer people out there than me who can surely think of a better way to get these changes through without a mass gathering?

Do you not think people have been fighting for years and years to change society? What's changed? Sadly, very little. Until we all, as a whole, rise up and challenge the status quo, nothing will alter.

I'm very conflicted about the protests but it's a better excuse for gathering together than going shopping or to the beach, or even a VE Day party.

And I really think that the response of the UK government to what happened in the US was so poor that it was obvious that nothing will change without the protesting
