Rant alert! How do those who want Lockdown to continue justify the suffering of everyone else?

My 3 month old has been waiting for a hip scan to confirm her rather obvious DDH. She needs a harness, the GP already confirmed she will need one and put in an urgent referral at her 6 week review and still nothing because they're not doing them at all here! You can only use a harness up until 6 months and after that the treatment for DDH is an operation! My baby is going to have to have a completely unavoidable operation or suffer lifelong damage to her hips because the NHS is just not interested in anyone who doesn't have Covid19! There isn't even the option to pay for it to be done privately! I am furious and so sick of seeing countless threads and comments about how lockdown needs to be continued and even stricter! All very well with your comfortable house and perfectly secure income and no real risk to your overall well-being but what about everyone else who is suffering?!
A friend had an abnormal smear come back in January but the follow up has been indefinitely postponed! How many people are going to miss life saving diagnosis', life saving treatments! It's disgusting and I feel so unbelievably angry at what this country has come through so 90% of people can avoid getting what is essentially a bad cold!

I think when people want the lockdown to continue, they're referring to all the non essential openings and activities going on.

I don't WANT it to continue, I'm really hating it now. I need injections in my hips/knees and an MRI - I can no longer walk up stairs and I'm in chronic pain.

But since our daily death rate is as high as all of Europe put together I'd rather nurses/doctors/the elderly/carers didn't die.

I will put their lives ahead of my escalating needs as long as I have to.

Rant alert! How do those who want Lockdown to continue justify the suffering of everyone else?

I agree with you OP. So many necessary but not "urgent" (I.e. immediately lifethreatening) medical procedures have been ignored. There are many reports of hospital staff with nothing to do because everything non-covid has been cancelled. And once the hospitals open there will be a huge backlog to work through.

It seems our rights to healthcare and also education, both of which are paid for through tax and should be universal, have been forgotten.

I hope your baby is able to have the harness she needs before it's too late Sad

How many bad colds do you know about that people have died from or had to go on a ventilator for?
I think I had the virus over Christmas but without testing, I can't be sure. I can assure you it's a lot worse! Hope you don't catch it and discover this for yourself, or end up being so bad you have to go into ICU.

I was broadly sympathetic with your post until the last sentence...

what is essentially a bad cold

Whilst I agree with your post, I do feel that this comment is in poor taste and I think you’re going to get a lot of flack for it on here.

A bad cold? Whilst I'm sorry about your daughter you can fuck off with that comment.

Im sick and tired of it TBH. Still locked down in Wales.

My friend had her breast clinic appointment as usual. I thought appointments like smears/breasts were kept?

When i see these bloody protesters in close proximity and we cant see dentists, shop for non essentials, go to the pub, run with my club...

can avoid getting what is essentially a bad cold!

I have a lot of sympathy for your child as my daughter is also waiting to be seen regarding her epilepsy and gynae problems, but that comment is just ignorant. Bad cold, ffs. I’ll tell that to the staff in the nursing home near me that list 16 poor souls to COVID19 and the lady next door who has been left with long term health issues due to it. Bad cold my arse.

Nearly 40,000 people don’t die of bad colds.

I agree, I think people mean the non essential side. If we keep that limited then things like you say can be re-opened.
As an aside, follow up smears are being carried out in our area, I think the rules here have recently changed as my sister had one yesterday but couldn’t a couple of weeks ago so it might be worth your friend ringing up and asking.

You won't get many sensible responses because of the "bad cold" comment.

I think you're right to feel upset and angry and there are many like you. Certain sects of society (middle class, nice homes with a garden , wfh jobs with no money worries) are doing a lot better out of all this than others and they aren't shy about admitting it. Meanwhile lockdown is causing less fortunate people to lose their jobs, homes, education and suffer with ill health. It can't carry on, I don't know why people think that it can. We need to come up with sensible and creative ways to live with this virus without absolutely decimating people's lives.

Thefrenchbaguette · 05/06/2020 08:49

@CrotchetyQuaver with respect, you clearly didn't need a ventilator did you. Not one person who has died with the virus (because let's not forget that they have never been able to differentiate from dying of and dying with) died because of a lack of access to treatment. The NHS is doing just fine in treating those that need it. And my point still stands! Most people who have the virus do not need hospitalisation and can self treat at home. So why should my daughter or any of the other thousands of people who are suffering indirectly do so because of that!

I am sorry that your DC is suffering unnecessarily. It is inexcusable that important healthcare is unavailable to you.

But how dare you refer to the 40,000 people he have died, and the hundreds of thousands of others who have been infected and doubtless gone through terrible anxiety as having endured 'a bad cold'.

Have some awareness of others' difficulties. Have some compassion.

The ‘bad cold’ comment is a really awful thing to say - have you seen how many people have died?

But - I’ve been on an urgent cancer referral since early March for possible stomach cancer. I should have been seen within a week, up to 4 weeks at the worst. It’s now June and I still don’t have a date for an endoscopy and am living off painkillers at the moment while also working and trying to homeschool two children. It’s quite possibly actually killing me. My local hospital hasn’t even had a CV case in a fortnight and still won’t see me.

The area I live in is pretty much entirely reliant on tourism. It’s just devastating.

They dont care OP. Ive seen this attitude time and time again on here. They only care about covid deaths and covid suffering. Thats it. If you die of anything else or are suffering from anything else its tough shit according to them. If you dare mention how hard lockdown is for your mental heath you get screamed at for being selfish and not caring that people are dying! I believe its based on fear and paranoia which has been encouraged by the media. Ive heard of people being told they should be "glad" they have cancer rather than covid. This whole thing is sick and its brought out a really disturbing element of society. I also believe some people are actively enjoying lockdown (eg rich, large house, massive garden, still getting paid for watching netflix etc) and want to punish everyone else because they like it.

Op, you missed the memo.

Suffering is fine as long as you're not suffering with covid.

Mental health
Routine appointments
Cancer
The economy being destroyed
Children left uneducated
Abuse

Just remember none of these things are as bad as covid

Bad cold, ffs. I’ll tell that to the staff in the nursing home near me

My Granny, who was a well 95 year old, died of an infection so mild nobody even knew she had a cold, including her.

It caused a temperature spike, which caused a small heart attack that killed her.

Very old people die of infections that would barely trouble younger people all the time.

@LaurieFairyCake, I'm in a similar situation and I have my MRI on Monday! In my area they have made arrangements with a new provider because the hospital aren't doing them for non-urgent stuff and the other facility they use is now a centre for something to do with coronavirus.

It's really frustrating not being able to walk more than 100 yards (and falling down stairs when my bastard knee folds on me!), but I accept that these are exceptional times and Covid must take priority.

I hope that things are a bit more normal if I need to be referred on for surgery, but if they're not, I'll just have to suck it up.

Indeed. Thanks to lockdown, and to measures in place to preserve NHS resources. And thank goodness for that.

You're either not very bright or massive goady.

"All very well with your comfortable house and perfectly secure income and no real risk to your overall well-being but what about everyone else who is suffering?!"

This is where you lost me. Why are you presuming everyone who wants it to continue lives in a comfortable house with a perfectly secure income? How do you know they arent suffering with a terrible illness and they dont want the chances of them catching covid increasing again!!

This. Um, are people not aware that a frail 90 year old with dementia and dysphagia can EASILY die from a bad cold? so could someone who was severely immunosuppressed or going through chemo etc

The NHS is doing just fine in treating those that need it.

And how the fuck would you know? You can’t even tell the difference between a cold and a virus that has killed 40,000 people in the U.K., including multiple groups of people in many nursing homes. Two of my children are at risk of it killing them. A fucking cold won’t kill them. Your ignorance is astounding.

I think the focus of lockdown release has been wrong. There is no way travel throughout the country should be unrestricted or that travelling from Birmingham to Bournemouth should be ok. We shouldn't be talking about pubs and beauticians reopening with the death rate so high. Schools should have been helped to reopen sensibly, because mine can follow the rules for yr, y1 and y6 but have said until the rules change they now can't reopen to anyone else. Which will be fun when my y1s move to y2 in September. Part time for everyone would have been more realistic.

I don't want a permanent lockdown, I want a sensible route out that minimises the risk. We don't even have working test, track and trace. I want that because the only way to go back to normal is limit the spread of the virus. It's not about 90% of people 'having a bad cold'. Even if it were that mild, it's about them all having it and being unable to work at once.

Routine healthcare is starting back up.
