People "stealing" cats

I just saw one of those viral videos on facebook. I don't know how to link facebook videos on here (anyone know?) But basically a couple are walking home and a lovely healthy looking ginger cat is following them. The cat has no collar but I know my cat hates wearing a collar and always ends up scratching it off.

Basically the boyfriend is filming and the girlfriend says something like "that cat is mine now". The boyfriend says "well if he follows us all the way home, I suppose i'll let you keep him".

Cue the rest of the video being the couple stroking the cat, when the cat stops the girlfriend stops and tries to get its attention again, and more stroking.

When they get to their apartment the girlfriend stands in their hallway and the cat lies on the step not going in.
The girlfriend waits inside and calls for the cat who then walks in and they shut their apartment door and feed it and basically say "you're going to love your new home" -.-

After backlash in the comments, the couple apparantly took the cat to the vet and it wasnt chipped (still doesnt mean it stray) and they've posted a 'found' on a couple of websites and nobody gets back to them within 72 hours, theyre allowed to adopt it -.-

I'm sorry but they goaded that cat to their house. Surely most people give a cat a stroke and then try and stop it following them not try to rehome them??

The 72 hours thing is ridiculous! What if the original owners just dont see the posts and are out there still looking for their cat??
They shouldve left the cat were it was and if the car was visibily hungry then yes probably rehome it.
But it seems the cat was well-looked after, friendly and fed -.-

it the cats "owners" gave a shit, they would have had their cat chipped.... cats choose if they want to live with you or not.

@CyberNan i completely disagree. There could be many reasons why the cat was not chipped but either way you don't just take a clearly well-looked after cat into your house.

And cats dont "choose" who they live with. Cats want what we humans can give them. That couple were stroking him and goading him home. He seemed a curious, friendly cat. Doesn't mean he wants to be taken into their apartment and have a "new life"

Honestly, we live in a relative bubble here in the UK. US has a big problem with strays. 99% the cat was stray. I lived there.

But there's also no excuse to goad a cat into your apartment and shut the door.
I see so many "missing" cat posters around my area and it makes me think, are they actually missing or has someone given it a "new life"

My cats are chipped but the video just made me think of all those "missing" cat posters and it's really annoying how some people think it's okay to take cats

I'm not just "fighting" about that couple - there are plenty of people like that couple and this couple highlighted how easily some people take cats that could potentially have a family.
Even in the UK some people will adopt a cat off the street because it walks past their house every so often.

I took a cat once, but he was a stray who'd had kittens in a pub outhouse. I fed them all for weeks. Caught them and got her spayed and chipped. The couple are twats though. My cats don't have collars but are chipped

And people who feed other people's cats also find annoying because cats are not the most loyal of animals and these people wonder
"Ooh this little one keeps coming back to our house, it must have chosen us!"

Americans don't tend to have outdoor cats as we do in the UK. The assumption that it was a stray/abandoned was not unreasonable over there. And they did check for ID

YADNBU. I thought I was being helpful last year when I almost ran over a cat lying in the middle of the road, it looked very ill and thin and I thought it had been hit by a car so I immediately scooped it up and took it to the nearest vet. It had diahorrhea all over me and all over the car. I left it at the vet, had to throw away my coat and pay a fortune to have the car cleaned. Then the vet phoned and said that it's already registered and had lots of health issues. Turned out I'd picked it up right outside it's own front door, 🙈 mostly cats are best left alone...

I do agree although... I'm not certain that looking well looked after necessarily proves that a cat isn't a stray. We had a regular visitor to our garden for several years and we just assumed it was a neighbour's pet, although we couldn't work out who it belonged to. When the cat got injured it became clear that actually it didn't have an owner after all, because no one was looking after it or getting it treated.

The cat blatantly followed them. She called it a couple of times but no cat that didn’t want to follow would have. The cat should be chipped simple as that.

Cat with no collar, no chip, clearly followed them all the way and right into their home. Cats dont follow you just because you call them, it was desperate for attention. Looks like it has found a nice caring home.
