Head of Year application

(Shamefully) posting for traffic as The Staffroom is quiet.

I am currently applying for a Head of Year job, probably lower senior so Year 7 or 8.

I’m excited, nervous and really, really want the job.
So I have a few questions...

  1. Any tips for the application?
  2. For those with experience - What is the job really like?
  3. What do you think makes a good head of year?

Thanks!

Use all public information that you can find about the school. What is the ethos? What is the demographic like in the catchment area?
Read old newsletters, do any heads of year get involved in the newsletters with activities? Use this as a springboard to showcase what you can offer.
Read the Ofsted report; SIAMS report if they have one. What are the areas for improvement and how might your skills fit in to that?
Good luck.

Thank you, it’s internal so thankfully I have insider info. You make a good point though, I’ll go back through all the documentation I can find.

Is it being advertised externally or just as a TLR? If externally advertised, sometimes our internal candidates forget to tell us their ideas or particular success stories they had which they can draw upon in the role. An external candidate might give better answers because they are new so are selling themselves.
Is there anything previous heads of year did that you really liked, and benefitted the students?
I would want to see some mention of pastoral care about the experience of school closure having on mental health and how a strong HoY can lead catch up for those who might not have been academically active.

  • Make sure you show you understand that HOY is as much about data and achievement as pastoral.

  • give a few ideas for projects you would work on based on your SIP e.g pupil premium achievement

Achievement of BAME pupils.
