Dumping rubbish

Have seen so many posts in social media recently about people going out for a jolly and leaving all their rubbish behind for the ‘rubbish fairies’ to tidy up after them. Horrible photos of piles of discarded camping chairs, rubbish bins, bbbqs and even trees cut down for firewood in our national parks. Has no one learnt anything about the environment during this lockdown? Seems the idiots are out in force. I’m fuming at how wilfully destructive these people are being. AIBU to think that if caught dumping rubbish and destroying the country side there should be much stricter penalties?

On the bbc news there's a story of a cow dying, pm found a discarded plastic bag inside, the poor thing had suffocated.

I don’t know. I could understand a few selfish people doing it but it seems to be the majority.

Lots of fly tipping too due to recycling facilities being closed. We go on lots of country walks and notice piles of rubbish dumped in fields and at the sides of roads.

It is disgusting how people can do that sadly there will always be a minority that really don't give a damn about the environment or other people.
They will always be about themselves. I agree there should be heavy fines for people who are caught doing this.
In our lane we've had people fly tip one person even had the audacity to dump a freezer chest up against our garage door we immediately phoned the council as I was worried that someone could get hurt and that we would be accused of doing it when we hadn't and wouldn't.

It's horrendous. There is no excuse for this. If there are no bins you take your rubbish home.

At least in the second pic people piled it up neatly, though I don’t know why TF you wouldn’t just put your bag of rubbish in your car and take it home?!?

I think there are just two types of people. I’ve never knowingly littered and on occasion I’ve tided up random litter a bit (pre-children when I had more time/my hands were free!). Then you get the type who leave empty bottles/cans on top of my letterbox, when there’s a public litter bin three paces away

Having said, I saw in the news about a woman who put her disassembled old shed against her back gates and was given a 400pound fine from the council.

There does need to be some sort of middle ground. People that do that to nature spots are despicable as these places are really the only places people can enjoy at the minute.

We had to change our planned walk on Monday because an idiot with a bbq had set the moor on fire. That was an accident rather than the sort of filthy laziness shown by the OP (there's no excuse for leaving rubbish), but such a predictable one when things are so dry. It required loads of fire engines, helicopters and firefighters.

I'm glad it's raining now tbh (not just being a killjoy, the gardens and crops badly need it)

I agree OP. If people like a place enough to visit it for a picnic, why spoil it by leaving their rubbish around? I don't understand the mentality. Do they think that somebody will be along to clean up after them or do they simply not care about the desecration they cause? Either way, it's revolting and antisocial.

I dont know what the solution is. Heavy fines might help, but many of these places are remote so it would be difficult to enforce. Perhaps education and social pressure so it becomes unacceptable, like drink driving.

Both, I think. And I wouldn't be surprised if many of the same people if they turn up somewhere and find it filthy then complain about why the mysterious 'they' don't deal with it. But probably don't want council tax hikes....although day trippers are messing up someone else's area anyway.

A friend of mine had to clean up excrement from the shore of Ullswater. Great piles of it. Nice.

Those sorts of people are probably the ones who are used to treating festival fields the same way, and don't see the difference between a park/ beauty spot and an organised event. Not that they should leave festivals in that state either. They probably spend more time in pubs/ clubs than natural spaces.

Sadly the bbq/ moorfire problem is routine whenever conditions get dry. Utter stupidity.

The bins have been stinking hideously of dog shit (at least they've been used) but piles of bags left next to overflowing bins is beyond grim for the poor rubbish collector.

At least we seem to have passed peak dog shit since exercise restrictions eased. Just at the point that people were using the full width of paths and verges to distance, they were gathering abandoned poos, presumably from non-usual dog walkers in the household being inconsiderate.

There was one country I travelled to where constant littering was culturally normal. Everything (including spitting) was just dumped on the ground in situ because some poor pleb would come along and deal with it to earn a few "pennies" of scrap value or as part of their job. Napkin in a restaurant? Dump it on the floor. Gross.
