Really surprised they left it up.

Wow you are right, they are clearly mistaken and should have taken that down.

I put in a complaint about something on the BBC website before Christmas - still waiting for a response.

well, in some ways not suprised the mod is ever thick or the bbc are trying and failing to get edgy.

Totally unacceptable. Can you link to the page, so that others can complain too? Sounds like someone at the BBC needs reminding that this term is highly offensive to lots of people.

Disgusting but the bbc has gone right down in terms of reporting anything over the last few years (my DS is severely autistic).

Report
Samcro · 02/06/2020 16:53

Terrible that they left it up.

Their woke meter is way off on this one. Get a viral tweet about this going and they’ll change their stance sharpish.

Scum isn't appropriate either imo.

How do I find the article? This is absolutely disgraceful

If they remove everything that the thin skinned find offensive the DM crew would never get to post anything.

Whether that would be a bad thing is debatable.

Perisoire · 02/06/2020 17:12

YANBU. I would never use that word and would call out anyone who uses it.

I have noticed the word ‘spaz’ used in American TV shows and books as a genuine synonym for ‘dumb’ which I think is also unacceptable.

Report
recycledteenager24 · 02/06/2020 18:57

megla so if you had a disabled dc / relative you'd be okay with them being called the r-word then, because that's how you come across.
if you'd read the full thread you'd know it was the bbc that refused to delete it NOT the daily mail.

YANBU, there are some words which should be zero tolerance and the r-word is one of them.

Report
whatareyouhiding · 02/06/2020 19:00

It refers to a retarded state of educational development, so the usage is correct in the circumstances.

The alternative might be to suggest those people on the beach will never change.

Report
BankofNook · 02/06/2020 19:07

The usage is not correct in the circumstances.

It's a medical term that has been co-opted as an insult for those deemed to have low intelligence and/or no commonsense, to the point that it is now considered an outdated term due to the associated slur.

Why should disability be used as a by-word for stupid?

Perhaps a more interesting question is, why are British people more offended by this than by our own government's support for communist concentration camps?

Even black and Muslim English people seem unconcerned, despite the suffering of some of their ancestors in British concentration camps in colonial Africa.

Report
Gimmecaffeine · 02/06/2020 19:17

Those people are objectively in a state of arrested development, incapable of taking reasonable decisions.

They are retarded.

The word means the same as late, though it's too generous to suggest they'll ever catch up.

The use of the word relates to an antiquated way of saying LD or developmental disorder. This has not been been used clinically for a very long time.

God knows why you feel the need to defend the use of an slur.
