To think this is a bit extreme

So a friend of mine is pregnant (4 months now I think). She has a DS already and her brother and his DW have 2 DS as well.
So my friend has had really bad sickness in this pregnancy. She had it with her first as well but has said on Facebook that it's so much worse than before.
Next thing I know she posts saying "it better be a girl this time!" As she never had it as bad with her DS. Then her mum posts a comment saying she's 'praying' for a girl. I told my DH this and he said it's probs because this will be the first granddaughter for my friends parents so they're keen for it to be a girl.
However, it seems a bit drastic to be 'praying' for a particular gender. What happens if it is another boy...they're setting themselves up for disappointment etc.

I know it's natural for people to have their own hopes for a boy or a girl but their wording seems a bit extreme. Surely they should be praying for a happy healthy baby regardless of gender. I know it's also none of my business really but it just really annoyed me with their choice of words.

Just looking for thoughts...

I think you're reading too much into this.

You’re overthinking it.

Yeah, I don't get this desire for girls. They're not 'better' than boys. Also 'praying' for anything is extreme, tbh but it's usually reserved for more serious issues, isn't it?

What if baby isn't healthy?

Bit crass to post on Facebook to be honest.

@Shouldershrugger and @NoSauce
I know I probably am...I just wanted to vent a bit and get other peoples thoughts.

@borntohula - that's what I thought re praying being for more serious issues!

Maybe we should all 'pray' it's a boy then just to cancel out the mums prayers. Or is that not how this praying thing works?

I don't think they think girls are 'better' than boys but they want a girl for a change after 3 grandsons.

maybe they mean just that it would be nice to have both a boy and girl as they would like one of each and wouldn't want to go through another pregnancy due to the horrible sickness?

YABR

People 'pray' for rain. It's just a saying. It's not like they're down on their knees all day every day!

Facebook is full of shite. That's why many of us don't use it! But we still have to listen to people whinge about it on here. That's far more annoying than other people hoping they have a daughter

Personally I’d much rather a boy 🤷🏼‍♂️ But at the end of the day, healthy is good

She can pray for anything she wants surely? That doesn't mean she's going to get it.

My mum wanted a boy. She had 6 girls.

It seems a bit innocuous. Maybe she’s not literally praying, she just said that to emphasise that she’d like it to be a girl. A lot of people use praying as a euphemism for really wanting something rather than literally doing so.

Most reasonable people are of course happy to have a healthy baby regardless of sex, they can hope for one but that doesn’t mean they’ll be shattered if it turns out to be the other.

Well there is no God, so praying is just like wishing. It doesn't matter at all.

I hope that if it is a boy, they don't show their disappointment in their actions toward him.

surely dgm should have 'prayed' before conception, the baby isn't going to change sex in utero Grin
yes i do get the 'it's an expression' but it's a numpty one imo
