Tipping delivery driver

Hi all,

Did our first Tesco home delivery today as I'm heavily pregnant and cocooning and my husband is up to his eyes with work so couldn't get out. When I checked online yesterday, there were a number of slots available for today so we weren't doing anyone out of a delivery slot (usually booked up at least a week in advance in our area).

It was the first time we'd ever used a home delivery service for our groceries and it never even crossed my mind that we might be expected to tip the driver until he was driving away. We don't have any cash in the house anyway so weren't in a position to tip today but just wondering what people usually do when they're having groceries delivered?

No need to tip.

I've never tipped, seems really weird. But I do tip my takeaway driver, I dont think they get paid a proper wage.

I don't think they are allowed to accept tips are they?

I don't think they are allowed to accept them. It's a job with a proper, if not a high, wage.

Really great to know what others do, thanks for taking the time to reply.

I tried to tip a Tesco delivery driver once and he said it was against company policy to accept tips. I never found out why. So the opposite of what the OP has said.

I am self isolating in London. Have quite a few co-morbidities. Have been kept alive by amazon fresh since March and always tip the guys a tenner. They take risks on my behalf and I’m very grateful to them.

I don't tip supermarket delivery people but I used to tip takeaway delivery people until COVID came along. Now I don't even do that.

Supermarket delivery drivers are not allowed to accept tips.
In normal times, I get an asda order each week and it tends to be the same 2 delivery drivers that come. At Christmas I tried to tip the guy that came as he is genuinely lovely and always friendly and helpful and we ordered a shit ton of stuff. He explained they aren’t allowed to accept tips but if I liked I could donate it to a local charity for him.

We have had a Tesco delivery each week from the start of lockdown. The first week I left money out to tip the driver because we were really grateful. I was fully expecting him to refuse but he was really grateful and said he appreciated it. So each week we have done the same and each week the (different) driver has been really pleased to be appreciated. It's only £4 but it's a token of our appreciation. My husband also gives our postman 4 cans of beer every week and he is REALLY appreciative.

I thought that supermarkets were frowning on cash transactions so really, you shouldn’t be offering cash.
No, I don’t tip delivery drivers... they earn way more than me.

I nearly always tipped before and have done every time since the coronavirus crisis began to show my appreciation for the essential job the delivery drivers are doing.

Like pp, I only tip takeaway delivery, never grocery and they are always grateful, even in pandemic I would hand over £2 in tissue.
