AIBU?

WIBU to play the guitar and sing in my back garden?

Reading the multitude of threads over recent weeks about people enraging each other with their garden behaviours - barbecues, bonfires, even bagpipes Shock

I was thinking about getting my guitar outside this afternoon and playing a bit of music in my garden. It's a large garden but we do have neighbours on both sides who would certainly hear it if they were outside. I am not dreadful (I used to get paid to do it) but of course that doesn't mean it's to everyone's taste! It's folk music, mostly. My neighbours do have parties (when not in lockdown), have noisy children, play their own pop music in the garden and one of them is a welder so it's not always quiet.

WIBU?

I would enjoy this if I were your neighbour. My neighbour plays his guitar in the garden. It is really nice.

Singing to yourself while playing will be fine I'm sure, belting out at the top of your lungs maybe not, enjoy the sun

YANBU to play for a bit. But like with every noise, there is a limit.
Especially now. I normally have absolutely no issue with neighbours having music on, but I swear to god, how it's constant because we are all at home, it is grinding. An hour? No issue. 6? A problem.
I am planning on blasting Rammstein next time the houses around decide to try to beat each other with volume ALL AFTERNOON with their weak ass heart radio playlists😂

Unless you are Will Varley I probably wouldn’t be too keen as aside from him folk isn’t my thing however assuming it’s tuneful and not too loud I can’t see it’s any different to people having any music outside .

@TheFencePainter Shock Are you me?
I've been planning to do the same thing Grin

Folk music? - please don't. Wink

To be honest, I wouldn’t be thrilled with my neighbour if they did this, and I wouldn’t ever do it myself.
However, I wouldn’t complain and as long as it wasn’t excessively loud or going on late at night I’d just accept it as one of those thing you have to deal with because you live near other people

Please don't. Acoustic guitars are awful. Folk music is awful. Hearing your neighbour singing is even worse.

Go ahead, as long as you don't live next door to me.

I would go mad and drown you out with some thumping heavy metal.
Neighbours radio's are bad enough without someone twanging a guitar and caterwauling.

Its fine. My neighbour does this, and me and ds like to sit out and enjoy it on a warm day

It is your space for your enjoyment, everyone makes noise in their garden, be it having the radio on or having laughing children playing.

The key is to be considerate, so don't belt out songs really loud, or play for 10 hours straight.

Jesus NO!!
About as cringey as the endless SM posts of ppl trying to cheer everyone up with their bloody ‘musical talents’
Folk music? I’d be accidentally having you.

I think it's fine, unless you've been complaining to others about the noise they make? We have to put up with some noise from our neighbours.

They might love it, or they might just put up with it, but as long as you're not at it for hours, I don't think it's any more inconsiderate than, say, laughing in the garden with a friend, or doing a bit of woodwork and drilling and hammering for a while. (not to suggest you sound like drilling and hammering)

My neighbour does this and she can both play and sing but I hate it. It is loud and intrusive. I go inside when she starts because it pisses me off

I would hate this. If you want to practice do so inside your own house.
Two sets of my neighbours seem to think there musical rights trump everyone else's...
I can't use my garden as there is always someone else blaring out music in theirs. I just want a little peace and quiet!

No please don't. That would be awful, I don't mind children playing noise and others people radio but singing with a guitar would drive me round the bend.

For an hour and not too loud I'd enjoy it.

Beats the bloody awful row I have to listen to on some Sunday afternoons.

Report
EmperorCovidula · 01/06/2020 12:58

I would really enjoy that but don’t do it for too long/too loudly. Absolute maximum 15 minutes at a sociable hour purely because not everyone likes folk weirdos or might need to work/do something else that would be difficult if you did it for ages.

I absolutely love warm balmy summer nights when I'm cooking dinner in the kitchen with all the windows open with the sound of my neighbour playing his guitar, it's so relaxing and makes me feel like I'm on holiday!

AdobeWanKenobi · 01/06/2020 13:00

For me there is nothing worse than listening to other peoples music. If that music was them singing and playing a guitar I'd be cringing.

They were wheeling kids out on the estate up the road over lockdown to play violins and sing really badly for everyone, so maybe my view is somewhat tainted.

Wiifitmama · 01/06/2020 13:02

If you were my neighbour, I would send my three folk musician children out to join you with their instruments! However, I accept we are probably in the minority :)
