AIBU?

Is it ok to bbq after 10pm if you live in a terrace?

Just that really. Last summer our neighbours regularly started grilling over coal at 10pm, 11pm midnight. They’re a hmo of about 8 people, more in the summer as far as I can tell, who are quite intimidating and like to socialise, play music and lift weights in the garden. They’ve just fired up the grill and I’ve had to leap out of bed to shut the windows in my toddlers room, else the smoke comes in and in to our room too. We have spoken to them politely several times (and once less politely when my pnd got the best of me last year) and asked them not to do this as it’s antisocial but they seem to forget or not care. Does anyone have any advice on what to do? The landlady doesn’t really want to know either... feeling quite frustrated, So AIBU or is it fine to bbq late at night by your neighbours window...

Yanbu. I don’t know if it’s illegal but it’s certainly annoying.

Oh my gosh thank you, I was ready to be told I was being precious and to get over myself!

There are at least 8 people in the small garden directly behind mine. It's 22.30 and they are playing really loud music. Even though it's a student area it's usually really quiet.

Sorry to hear that @Toddlerteaplease I totally 100% empathise. Hopefully they’ll turn it off at 11?

My street is great apart from one chavvy woman three houses down. She was in her garden gone 1:00am recently with her daughter (13-14) and a friend being very loud

We've been here nine years and there's been numerous times when she's been very loud. Just heard her now on her phone. I've never complained as I honestly don't think that type of person cares or will ever change. She had friends over in the garden all the way through lock down

Not sure if illegal but if there is loud music playing late at night and being loud it can be classed anti social behaviour just be careful on how you play it with them as they very well could turn nasty

I just think it's rude to be bbqing late at night especially in a terraced house and you know your next door neighbour has a baby.

YANBU some people really have no consideration at all. It's not ok at that time OP at all

I hope so. I have to be up for work at 5.30!

I feel your pain. I once lived next to a family who i swear didn't have a kitchen. They cooked every meal outside on the bbq, come rain or shine, all hours of the day and night, all year round.
Could never leave a window open in that house or hang washing outside.
But they were quiet and we never had any other issues with them, and I never said anything as it was clearly just how they lived. Would probably say something now I'm older and grumpier!

It's anti social behaviour. Take photos or film it, keep records and inform the local council who will have a link in their website for such a thing.

No YANBU but some people are so inconsiderate it's unbelievable. Me and DH got woken up at 5am this morning by our next door neighbour and three other blokes talking at shouting volume in the street for 30 minutes right outside our house (and our bedroom is the front of the house). Eventually the three other men got into a car and drove off. WTF?!

@LudaMusser oh yeah they all take speakerphone calls in the garden at all hours, sometimes at 5.30am. I think the logic is going outside to not disturb all the people inside...

Thank you everyone so far. I guess my fear is that they will turn nasty. They’ve turned the outside lights off now so hopefully it won’t be too noisy or smokey tonight

Btw would recommend ear plugs. I'm a light sleeper and really I have to wear them most nights when it's warm enough to need to leave windows open overnight. They sometimes fall out in the night and I can often hear things even with them in but they do dull the noise enough for me to get some blocks of sleep in. Everywhere we have lived so far has been fairly noisy on occasion when I compare it to my childhood home where it was very rare to have any noise late at night.

Many local councils make HMOs get a special licence - have you checked all is in order with this property? And often, the licence comes with responsibilities for the landlord - like ensuring tenants aren’t antisocial. If the landlady doesn’t take you seriously, maybe she’ll be more receptive to council enforcers.

I love a BBQ and we had one earlier, (around 6 - 7pm) but wouldn't dream of doing it as late as 10pm, that is incredibly anti social!
YANBU

I understand having people round and it going on until midnight but starting the bbq at 10.30? Also it is a Sunday night and whilst many are still working from home etc lots have to work and go to school so doing it in a Sunday is out of order

We have one of those 2 houses away and they’re the same .
House full of blokes ,about 6 of them and all through this they’ve had people over and their bbq’s have gone from their back garden to the front of the house which is open and right next to our garage and parking space .
We haven’t yet but I would recommend getting in touch with the letting agency and reporting it

Was coming on to say the same as the PP. HMOs need a special licence, I've made a report to the council before. My friend is surrounded by 4 of them, each with 8 men living in them. The landlord didn't want to know, but soon changed his tune when the council got involved.

I used to live in flats overlooking a terrace and one house had bbq's until 3am several night a week, they were all very loud.

Yes it is definitely selfish.

Can you call the police. I've similar neighbours all men sharing over 10 living there. I call the gardai once it is keeping me awake.
I don't mind on a weekend these arseholes are partying on vodka every night since March.
Thankfully all the neighbours hate them so they're not suspicious it is me.
