AIBU?

AIBU to think there should be some form of transparency/selection

DH works for a business that can reopen. Team of 10 all doing the same job at the same level. 2 were kept on working from home in March as demand was tiny, while the other 8 were furloughed. They’ve been told very clearly not to just show up tomorrow when the business can officially reopen and to wait to be called in. Evidently some of the team have been called in but nothing has been said about who or how they were selected. The amount DH gets on furlough is about half what he would usually earn because of a ballsed up tax code (have spoken to HMRC and it will be fixed but that doesn’t help in the here and now) and how commission is worked out so he really needs to work, but this ‘wait to be called’ makes it hard to pick up a temp job elsewhere (he’s not fussy about what he would do) as the call to go back to work could come at any time.
AIBU to think they should be more open about how people are being picked to go back in, or can employers just do what they like with regard to this?

Yes, there should be transparency. He should ask his employer how they are being selected. also, if he wants to go back then he should say. Some people don't want to go back due to childcare commitments or shielding so he might actually make their life easier when deciding...

Thanks he is going to ring tomorrow. The problem is they all want to go back as there is talk of redundancies - can’t help thinking the selecting of people to go back is connected to that process, but trying not to be pessimistic!

If he is only getting about 50% of his pay under furlough ie because of the £2500 cap I would assume they are taking back either the cheaper people to employ to keep their outgoings to a minimum while they still can. There is no requirement to consult re furlough or bringing back. If they end up in a redundancy situation then depending on how many employees they have there may then be a legal requirement for consultation.

It also does not mean that he is in line for redundancies.

Thanks that’s reassuring! He’s only getting about half what he would usually earn because of a tax muck up and because so much of his earnings is commission based and he hasn’t been there long. Guess we will just wait and see!

On other threads people are bleating about how they don't feel 'safe' about being called back to work yet!
Is your DH in a Union?
The unions ought to be be involved here.
