Nothing is wrong with you dieting is bloody hard. Food is an addiction that is hard to break. What diet did you try?

I recently lost almost 40% of my body weight after failing at every single diet I'd ever tried.
I did it by:

  1. Making sure I stuck to a calorie cap of 1400 and then 1300 calories per day but not restricting the type of food. So, if I wanted chocolate then I ate chocolate, if I wanted pizza then I ate pizza - but only up to my maximum calories.
  2. Trying not to start eating until as late as possible in the day - once I started eating, I found it harder to not eat.
  3. Reset when you do something bad. Don't dwell on it - just move on.

I'm sure all the perfect people on here will flock in to say how awful I am and how I shouldn't be saying any of this but it worked for me.

I hear you OP.

I lost lots of weight last year. Since lockdown and the traumatic ending of a relationship I have been stuffing my face non stop. I hate myself for being such a fat disgusting mess yet I cant stop. Food is literally the only thing that brings me any happiness right now.

The shame is real. I start a new diet/ healthy eating plan etc every Monday. Have lost nothing. Or nothing I haven't put straight back on.

I understand behavioural science. I also understand nutrition. None of that knowledge has helped me to change my behaviour.

Its not the how, its the why.

Why do you want to lose weight? If you get that sorted you will be in a better place and feel more motivated.

It's tough op, I'm on day 6 (3rd attempt since lockdown began). Start over tomorrow. Make sure you aren't doing any daddy diets, Team RH are great, check them on Facebook

OP, don’t be disgusted with yourself.

Depending on your way of life, weekends can be much harder to maintain a healthy eating discipline.

Get busy, find stuff to distract you and find the right way for you to eat more healthily.

Do you need Weight Watchers support and plans? I think they have a free 3 month thing atm.

Stuffing your face today doesn’t negate tomorrow!

I have been eating sensibly for a couple of weeks, today is another matter. Tomorrow, Monday, slip back into a better way.

If you want to try low carb, there are boot camps on here, also Diet Doctor has a 30 day free trial and there is loads of information and fantastic, simple recipes on there. It's made the whole process more interesting to follow, for me at least.

I agree with PP re capping your calories but not necessarily the food that makes them up. That's what I did too and I managed to lose quite a few stone.

Also just walking more. I got a dog around the same time I was trying to lose weight and it helped massively (not recommending that by the way - just the walking! Grin ).

Also agree, although perhaps it's not the healthiest way, about starting to eat later in the day. I've never really been a breakfast person anyway but when I lost a lot of weight capping my calories, I also didn't start eating until around lunch time.

Also a few of my friends have recently lost a lot on the 5:2 diet. Eat normally for 5 days and then cap your calories for 2, can't remember the exact number but it was quite low. They did a Monday and Thursday as their 'fast' days and just ate normally the rest of the week.

Not for me personally but they swore it worked and it was easier to manage as it was just one day to get through.

I don't know how anyone is getting through this without the help of lovely food, booze and whatever else you need to keep sane! Don't beat yourself up, I'm the same x

It’s Saturday - I really do think psychologically that makes a difference.
Please don’t say you feel disgusted OP. Be kind to yourself, dieting is hard. If you fall off the wagon you just get back on. Blips happen.

Honestly, diets don't work. You need to make a total lifestyle change. I say this as someone who lost 10 stone. I tried every diet out there, I have PCOS so also tried keto which did work, but I knew I couldn't low carb for the rest of my life.

I stopped buying junk and always had fruit and yoghurt for something sweet as I can't cut out sweet stuff. I also losely follow the 16:8 style of eating.

Dieting for me was always limiting myself and then expecting once I was slim, I could just go back to it. I couldn't understand people who had a biscuit with their tea and not half the pack or a slice of cake and didn't go back for another one.

I don't know if this is helpful but I just had to change my relationship with food and that was the hardest part. It was an emotional crutch for me, a way to reward myself or console myself. I am not perfect, I still eat too much sweet stuff sometimes, but I stopped hating myself for it, wrote it off as a bad day and started again.

In addition, please avoid the low fat stuff if you can. Imo much better to have some full fat greek yoghurt with berries for breakfast than a muller light after dinner

OP. I can totally sympathise with you as I've had this problem on and off for years and it really affected my mental health. I think what affected my mental health was not being fat per se, but not being able to stick to a regime and feeling like I had poor willpower. I was EXACTLY like you - sometimes I couldn't stick to a diet for more than one day - most before was 5 weeks - I lost a stone but was still obese.
However, since Easter I've stuck to a diet of 850 calories a day and am in the '10 stones' region for the first time in years!! I'm now out of obese and just in overweight. - BMI approx 29. For me to reach a normal BMI I need to lose just over 1 and a half stone. I also go for 1 45 minute run every day. For me, only calorie controlled diets will work.
Good Luck OP. If I can lose weight, you can too!

Once you will stick to it. There will be the big enough reason and the want. Shit happens.

Just to say for completeness, since losing weight I'm feeling much better psychologically.

All diets work in the short-term, but they are not the answer.

DON'T GO ON A DIET.

Try reducing the amount you eat gradually.
3 biscuits with a cuppa? Have 2.
Large portion of chips? Try medium.

Also, I read this somewhere and it worked, don't do "I will start on Monday". Start the day you decide to start the changes. No "last hurrah". No sireee. There will be a "day off" next week.
It worked for me.

And putting everything into My fitness pal. Fuck me. Was I eating healthily, but I could feed a family with that amounts...Blush

I suggest you look up a Facebook group called Delay Don't Deny. Lost of incredibly motivating weight loss stories and images of people who have lost and kept the weight of years. It's intermittent fasting. Nobody makes money on you fasting between say 7pm at night and 11am the next day, so that's why you probably haven't heard of it. There's a book of the same name plus videos by Dr Jason Fung. Michael Moseley is a fan too.
It's a game changer.
You aren't a failure. Food is delicious and plentiful. Your body does its best to hold on to stored fat. You need to tackle that with knowledge.

Follow a guy called James Smith

Basically - CFD (Calorie Fucking Deficit) - Eat what you want within the calories

Neat up 24/7 - Move more. All the time. Don't worry about training to start with, but move.

One hot day doesn't make a summer - just because your car has a flat, you wouldn't slash the other three. If you have a bad day, get back on it, carry on, keep trying.

especially when no one else in the house is dieting

This was one of the hardest things for me. My husband is slim and has a manual job so he never puts any weight on, ever. He eats like an absolute pig though, sweets, chocolate, biscuits, crisps, large portions for tea but you'll never see any evidence on him of it all, I hate him for it.

I would find it so much easier if I just didn't buy 'junk' at all and only stocked my cupboards with healthy stuff but I can't because I'm not the only one in the house. It's too hard to resist when it's there in front of you though.

Same here op. I have been pretty good and then had a huge pizza for tea

But that's fine! As long as you account for it somewhere, these things once in a while are absolutely fine. I lower my cals for 6 days a week bit lower than what I am supposed to eat and add it to the "day off". So in the week I am still at the allowance. It really prevented me from either giving up after 1 imperfect day ("ugh, what's the point now. I will start again next week" thing), gave me a sense of normality and allowed me to somewhat satisfy my cravings. Don't feel bad. We all need pizza from time to timeGrin
