Frozen fish - meal ideas

Hello, I have been lumbered 4 big bags of frozen fish pie mix.The problem is I don’t like fish pie when it’s made with frozen fish.

AIBU to ask for frozen fish pie mix meals that aren’t fish pies and that don’t need too much of things like butter, milk, cheese, cream etc to keep costs low?

Fish curry? Make your curry sauce & then for the last half hour add the fish? My lot love it on chips, and they otherwise prefer their fish with a generous coating of batter :-)

Any fave recipes? I’ve looked online and they seem to need so many ingredients!

Fish works well in coconut based curry sauces.
You can substitute curry powder for the separate spices if it is easier.
Is there a smoked fish in your mix as if so make a kedgeree.
Or spicy tomato sauce works well with white fish but you might want to separate the different types of fish out as salmon might not work in this....

Defrost it first, then it's not frozen. Snowflake nonsense.

That’s a good point, as it’s smoked haddock, cod and salmon, wasn’t sure if they work together in a curry. Separating the pieces is a good idea.

What's the problem with frozen fish?

If you don't like frozen fish in fish pie then surely you won't like anything else made with it either?

It is nice made in a quiche with broccoli and lemon zest.
My lot sometimes like fish pie filling over pasta

It isn’t as nice in a fish pie. I’m hoping it will taste better in other recipes.

It may be the quality of the fish? Tesco’s fresh fish pie mix is £4 for 250g, whereas frozen is cheaper.

Or what about a sort of pate to have with crackers etc... bet there will be recipes online

Thanks 7days, yes there were so many recipes online, I thought there might be some tried and tested successes.

Jamie's fish curry is the absolute best, and five ingredients.

- Heat 2 tbsp oil
- Chuck in 500g cherry tomatoes (halved), cook for a couple of mins until they blister
- Add 1 heaped tbsp curry paste (korma works really well, those paste pots are also great), stir for 30 secs to release the spices
- Add at least 1 heaped tbsp lime pickle (2 is good), stir for 30 secs
- Tip in a can of coconut milk, bring to the boil
- Add fish, cook for however long it needs (fresh is usually 4ish mins)
- Season to taste

Serve with rice. I often add green beans, baby corn or other veg for a quick one-pan meal. If I have more time I'll mushroom or saag bhaji for sides. The curry is really delicious, I've made it for a few people and everyone's added it to their own dinner rotations!

Oh great, I hope you like it! I've never tried with frozen fish but I might do next time to cut costs a bit. I think that recipe serves 4, but you can bulk it out with naan etc.

I find frozen fish can be watering sometimes, as some are frozen in 'glaze' of water to add weight! I defrost over a colander and squeeze/gently press the excess water out.

- You can always just add veg and a jar of curry sauce if easier than multiple herbs and spices
- green, red or yellow fish curry with rice
- Pasta bake with the fish in it
- kedgeree

I think that might why. That’s a good tip about squeezing out the water.

I’ll have a look at the jars of curry sauce today, that’s a good idea too.

Oh yess make a fish curry. We had one recently a red curry with white fish & sweet potatoes. it was a Bill Granger recipe so good, really quick & simple to make.

Meera Sodha has a "20 minute fish curry" with cherry tomatoes. It's an absolute doddle, really delicious. It calls for fresh fish but I use frozen fish and add 10 minutes to the simmering time.

This is delicious There's no need to faff about roasting the peppers if you don't want to - they work just as well cooked from raw in the sauce. The original recipe of this recipe uses lime zest and juice rather than lemon - I like that better, but am sure lemon would work fine too.
