Looking to get a super comfy new sofa soon and spent a bit of time browsing online.

Lots and lots of velvet sofas around which I really like the look of. But is a velvet sofa wildly impractical? We have 2 small ish kids.

Can't think how you would clean any spillages or stains without making the velvet go all funny. If you have a velvet sofa, would you recommend?

Don't do it. Velvet shows every little mark and isn't practical. I've put a throw on the seats as the cat hair, dribble etc was getting a bit much. I've got the IKEA Stockholm sofa which was meant to be their better quality range but it's no better than the cheaper sofas.

Agreed don’t do it. We had the same thought of u and have 2 little ones. I recommend sticking to DFS or furniture village where u can pay for repair cover - so no matter what the kids do, it can be fixed! We have the furniture village Ariana which is closest to velvet we could find

This is mine with the throw which is more manageable.

I love the look of velvet but I would also say don't do it! We have a velvet bed and I am constantly brushing it so it looks nice and a headboard doesn't get much wear compared to a sofa.

I have a velvet armchair and I adore it but it does show up every little mark.

I love being able to take the covers off of the sofa and chuck them in the washing machine. I can’t do that with the velvet armchair.

I would never get one, wouldn't even get velvet cushions.
I have two cats and velvet attracts hairs and fluff like a magnet. Plus dust and 'bits'.
We all suffer from eczema in our house too, so lots of oil and greasy legs on the sofa leaving marks....no thanks!

Another one saying don't do it - luckily ours is only an armchair but you breathe on the bloody thing and it marks

I think they’re gorgeous (save for crushed velvet, which I loathe) but I have no idea how they wear. I would keep a throw chucked over it to preserve it.

I also find velvet uncomfortable to sit on! It seems to ‘grip’ other fabrics and stops my trousers from moving with me.

Just get ‘clever’ velvet or ‘smart’ velvet (all the big sofa companies do these now) in a dark colour. Our navy ones get wrecked everyday with sticky fingers and the marks just wipe off with a damp cloth.

I don’t get these comments, I have one with 4 kids and it’s fine. You can wash the covers. And it’s very comfortable

We have velvet cushions, and they're fine! I throw the covers in the wash about once a month, but we don't have any pets unless you count the eleven year old

I think corduroy is a lovely soft comfortable material for a room which small children will be in.
In a dark forgiving colour.

I’ve got 2 velvet sofas, 2 young kids, and a cat, and the sofas are managing very well - they can be wiped down absolutely fine. The main sofa companies do velvet that bounces back nicely and I find that the nap of velvet is a LOT more forgiving than flat fabrics. Mine are from Sofas & Stuff - I’d recommend them.

I have a velvet sofa from Made, and two kids who like to drop all sorts of shit all over it and it's fine. I think it's been treated with something as spills just wipe off. I've even washed the covers before when one them vomited all over it, turned out fine.

Apparently Habitat have ones in a special fabric that looks velvet but repels liquids and is stain resistant! My sister’s getting them

I've a fabric cushion back and whilst I love it it's wrecked after two kids! I'm getting leather sofas on weds!

Are you talking normal velvet or that awful silver crushed velvet beloved of Katie Price/Love Islands stars etc?

Normal velvet is a bit impractical, I have older kids but 3 dogs who go on our sofas and velvet is like a magnet to hairs.

Velvet shows ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING. I wouldn't go anywhere near it at the best of times, never mind with kids.

I think children trash sofas whatever the material. I can’t say our leather ones are holding up particularly well. We got leather as everyone said they’d be more practical but I’m not so sure. Basically, just get what you like but don’t have any expectations that they’ll last you decades.

@ZaraW I love your Green Stockholm, I didn’t know they existed. I’ve got an orange one, also with a throw on it!

We got our velvet sofa from James and Rose two years ago and it still looks new... after I’ve hoovered it... which I have to do a lot because the thing is an absolute magnet for cat hair! Still love it though.

Aside from it being impractical, I really can’t stand the feel of velvet or velour type materials - it makes me shudder to touch it. I’d have to sit on the floor at your house Grin It’s your house so buy whatever you like but you might find a few of your house are like me (I think it’s quite a common thing even though I sound bonkers)

@Mammyloveswine

Just watch shoe buckles on leather sofas.

They will scratch but can rip too if you are very unlucky.

No shoes on the sofa is a good rule with children 👍

LaaLaaLanded I've seen the orange and it is lovely. Mine is around five years old they only had navy or green when I bought it.
