AIBU?

Chicken virus will make Covid-19 look like nothing.....

Dr Michael Greger, suggests "an apocalyptic virus that would make corona seem irrelevant"

Leading scientist warns of the danger of a pandemic triggered by chicken farms that could kill half the world's population - yes it is reported in the Daily Mail, The Sun and a few regional papers. This guy thinks we are headed for more animal spawned virus in the coming years so seat belt up and wait for it....

YABU - don't be stupid it won't happen for a long time - worry story

YANBU - the way humans farm animals it will happen sooner than you think

I can see how intensive farming conditions of chickens could spread disease.

There's been talk of a terrible global pandemic for years. DP used to work at a research facility and when I asked him if Covid-19 was it he said no.

Mine you, with the way some hysterical people are reporting that 'someone' passed right by them..... OMG shoot them now... they really don't understand that someone walking by them and passing in a second is not going to kill them.

The country has become a nation full of fearful and frankly ridiculous people... snitching on the neighbours that invited a family member around because 'it's not allowed'.... Oh my look at how busy the park/beach/walk was whilst not seeing the irony in that they are there commenting...

The nation is full of idiots ready to burn someone at the stake for 'walking right by them'... or entertaining a family member

Is this what we have become?

I told you it was in various 'newspapers' don't be so lazy and go google the said 'newspapers' yourself - anyone of them will do.... it's just a story about a doctor saying there is much worse based on the way humans farm animals....

I can see it happening, but, personally, I'd like to get over this one, as much as we ever will, before starting to worry about the next deadly global pandemic tbh.

It all sounds a bit hypothetical ‘this could happen’ from a single scientist isn’t really enough to give me cause for concern at this moment, particularly as that specific doctor is a plant based advocate so of course he’s going to push anti farming stories. I am fully for farming reforms and reduction of meat based diets but clearly this is connected to his personal philosophy.

Conveniently he’s also published a new book about surviving a pandemic, so not really a coincidence that’s he’s in the press at the moment. Books gotta be sold!

When i see that in the Lancet or the Nature journal then I'll believe it, but not whats in the daily heil re other such rags!..

They say that affordable, viable cultured meat is about 10 years away at most...? Little bit more/less depending on the meat type. Why don't we just put more money into that and speed up the whole process so they can make chicken/beef/pork/bacon/etc that tastes exactly the same, then subsidise the hell out of meat factories and cultured meat products, tax farmed meat more, and basically ditch livestock farming altogether?

Seems the safest approach.

It isn’t in “loads of press”, just a couple of tabloids. A guy who’s a vegan and an animal rights activist is exploiting COVID19 to warn about the potential that intensive animal farming could lead to another animal virus. I support his mission, but he has an agenda.

Intensive animal farming is certainly not safe, but it’s hardly “we’re all going to die” territory. And talking about a pandemic that kills half the world within a few years is ludicrous hysteria.

Wtf? How rude OP! If YOU share a story on a forum, it's usual practice to share YOUR source. Not lazily spout vague information and then call others lazy for not googling.

I think it is an argument for veganism frankly and I say that as a meat lover. I'm eating more plant based food on health grounds and feel better for it.

Still love steak though...

Yeah, agreed. You should have provided a source, OP.

Yes, well they said similar about bird flu and swine flu and they came to nothing much. SARS and related viruses (including CV19, aka SARS-CoV-2) seem to be much more worrying.

But then who knows what's going on in the various research labs, and the farms with their cross breeding and unhealthy conditions etc.

Report
serenada · 30/05/2020 02:18

What about the monkeys who stole the samples from the Indian lab? And then started chewing the samples?

I think viruses like covid mutating and infecting animals where it could continue mutating and reinfect humans with a much more potent strain is a danger.

Or perhaps I'v just watched too many films. i can't decide.

You started a thread and got arsy when people took interest and asked for a source. What a peach you are.

This. I read his books because I favour a plant based diet, but he is an opportunist.

Looks to me as if Op is obsessed with COVID-19 and terrified of dying from it and is coping with that by acting out and expressing anger and derision at anyone who doesn't ignore social distancing rules.

Sad really.

Hope you feel better soon Op. As I've said on other threads, try and spend some time reflecting and processing how you are feeling. And if that really doesn't help then maybe see if some online therapy could be arranged. A few sessions might help you cope better.
