AIBU?

Was I AIBU to walk out of supermarket.

I went to a supermarket which isn't my usual one today. There was a queue outside, but it moved pretty fast and was ably managed by staff who were also helpfully cleaning trollies. All well and good. However, inside was a different matter, it felt really busy and barely any of the customers (the majority of which were waring face masks) were adhering to the social distancing rules. I had a woman reach round me to get something and people were passing really close.

I got to the end with of an aisle which was blocked by 3 members of staff 2 of the large trollies they use to stack shelves. I couldn't safely pass so I turned around and tried to go up the next aisle which was empty and was loudly told off my a member of staff for not following the arrows, I tried to explain that I couldn't get up the other aisle but he just walked off. At that point I picked my shopping bags out of my trolley and walked out. Was I unreasonable.

What do you want from this? A round of applause?
Of course you weren't being unreasonable but the staff are there to do a job, aisles in shops aren't always wide enough for 2m as you pass another shopper and staff can't do much about other shoppers getting too close to you.

If you felt it was the safest thing to do, then it was reasonable BUT you then had to go find another supermarket and start the shopping process again. I would have just got on with the shopping.

Oh christ, I'm sorry I asked.

What do you mean? At that point I picked my shopping bags out of my trolley and walked out.

Do you mean you walked out without paying for your shopping?

Thanks Dilly, you know what's interesting, when all of this first started I hated the whole 2m things and people jumping out of the way. Today I'm mad that people can't stay out of the way!

I would have probably done the same OP! The supermarkets seem to make a big show at social distancing in the queuing system and then at the checkout, but it's a free for all inside. I went yesterday and like you say there were supermarket workers chatting and blocking aisles and other customers leaning over. I put this down to some people have become accustomed to the supermarket and have forgotten we're supposed to be keeping our distance.
The annoying thing is you had to find somewhere else to shop.

YANBU at all OP.
I've just started another thread on this very issue.
I carry on (I'm still wearing masks and gloves for things like that), but it's making me more and more angry every week that there are some people who are being completely selfish - it's very much an attitude of 'I'm fine with it, so suck it up' when they know better.

She took her bags @sexbearhouse not the contents of the trolley

I understand what you are saying. I was waiting to get to the flour in Lidl when a woman passed right by me to pick up a bag, I don’t think some people know what 2metres is.

You need to be within 2 metres of someone for 15 minutes to have a chance of catching the virus. You do know that don’t you?

ClassicCola · 29/05/2020 19:59

What do you suggest they do? Only let one person in at a time? You are not going to catch it from walking past someone.

A member of staff would have had to put everything back from your trolley.

How did you end up getting your groceries in the end?

Shopping isn't nice at the moment.

I can't blame you for walking out. Some people seem to think that wearing a mask means you can forget all about social distancing.

Staff must hate it too. It must make for a stressful working environment; I don't suppose there's much they can do about it.

So you left your shopping in the trolley and left? I think that's rude.

Like why you’ve started this thread. Why do you need validation? Just a really strange thread.

See,I don't get this. Not disagreeing with you Barnaby as I really don't know. However, I don't understand how if someone coughed in your face, less than 2m distant, and they had the virus, surely you would be at risk?

Would they really have to be there for 15 minutes coughing in your face? Not being goady, genuine question I have difficulty understanding about all this SD stuff.

Barnabyboyo Then what's the point of social distancing? Genuine question.

Did you ask the staff stocking the shelves if they could move to let you past?

I mean you're the one that's been most inconvenienced surely? Also if you're already sorry you've asked I can only assume that you're new to Mumsnet. It gets much meaner!

Ive Alos been a bit fustrated with people not social distancing properly when shopping. What's the point of waiting for ages outside if inside is in close proximity.
However, I think if you chose to walk out of the supermarket that's your prerogative to do so but noone in the supermarket would have actually have been bothered. It's not as though you were invited to dinner and walked out. It's just a bunch of strangers and the only person who would be affected by your walking out is you as now you'll have to queue up all over again at another supermarket.

So YNBU to walk out. YBU if you think it matters to anyone or makes a difference to the supermarket.

Chiyo Really not looking for validation, my mother thinks I should have put my shopping back, as do Sparklingbrook and Joesette. Just wanted to see what people thought.

I really wasn't that inconvenienced. 3 of the major supermarkets are all five minutes of each other! And there was no queue at the one I ended up in!
